It shouldn't be, is it locked in first gear? Kind of sounds like you're in between 1st and 2nd gear, make sure the shaft, that switches gears, is pulled all the way out.

If all that is good, you may have stripped the idler gears in the tranny. I've had to replace mine a couple times.

loud is fairly normal, if you're talking about gear noise. clanky? could be a bad bearing, or just the normal slop in the selector mechanism. tear it down and have a look-see. there's only 7 moving parts in there.

Even if it's locked in 1st you'll still notice a bit of slop which can cause a small amount of "clunking" sound. Best way to solve it is to kill off the slop. Any of the RCRG rigs that run a Maxx tranny have had the trannys "fixed" to have ZERO slop. It's tighter than a TXT tranny as far as amount of slop.

So how do you "fix" the slop then?

If I don't have something posted up by Saturday.... just remind me and I'll do my best to post some pictures/write-up of it.

From the other maxx tranny thread on this page.

This not only locks the tranny into first (can do the same thing by locking the shaft that moves in/out of the tranny) but it also gets rid of all the slack in the E tranny.
