Talking Maxx Crawler started

Ok, it got started a while ago, but I'm getting somewhere now

First draft of the chassis had the gearbox poking thru the bottom, with a second sub chassis wrapped around it!

Click the image to open in full size.

New version has the gearbox 'up on blocks' - Saves making the sub chassis - dunno what I was on that night!
On the output shaft is another 'anti'torque' transfer box, like I made for the TLT - no body roll on this one neither (I hope)

Final layout for the chassis tub - before bending.
Spoke to the guy making it today, and it's already in the post

Great start! If you keep the entire rig as high quality as you have with the first couple parts, your going have one kickass rig. Keep posting those pics.

The transfer case is solely to drive the rear axle, so the ratio needs to be the same as the front.
I'm using a standard Maxx gearbox as primary.

I think he might have meant a different ratio for the axles. like how clods do the 9t rear and 10t front.

Ah ok, no, it's a 1:1 transfer

I guess you could make it adjustable, but the axle centres for the bearings would make it a bit difficult.
Thinking about it, would there be a need for two different ratios, if it's shaft drive?

Got bits flowing in thick and fast now!

Still waiting for gearbox mounts and gearbox-transfer case shafts, but it's starting to resemble something (dunno what though)

Transfer case in situ (toward rear)

Offset gearbox, so both shafts are symmetrically offset front and rear.
Room on right for batteries

Countersunk fixing holes

View from the front - top arms being remade due to drawing carve-up

Diff blocks with grub screw access slot

Thru the top arm, bottom ones left solid

18" Wheelbase mock-up
Click the image to open in full size.

Top arm was going to have servo mounted on it, but it looked too tall, so shelved that idea.
Pem nut in diff block is possible link mounting point, but unlikely now.

Default Quick steering question

This project is starting to come together now, but one question;

For rear steering, should the steering rods be in front or behind the axles?
From a protection point of view, I guess behind would be better, but does it have any negative aspects?

behind the rear axle. no negative aspects. It works exactly the same as if you were to mount in front of it except it doesn't get bashed so much.
