New look for my old Summit

I put this cage on my summit... It looks and works great. Skip the plastic panels. They don't hold up. They get impact marks from hitting rocks and look bad after the first crawl.

Got it installed. Went with the Gorilla Tape panels. Left my dirt shields over the tape on the rear. Looks great. Thanks for the idea!

Slingers are too heavy. Dewalt getting very hot even at low speeds. 12t pinion. Advice?

Yeah the slingers are a lot of weight to sling around. I actually run a 17t with my Dewalt and I have had great results. Motor gets a little warm but I watch temps usually really close. Winter and fall and early spring don't have to worry. In summer though I watch temps every 10 mins. Sometimes I just gear down to 14t but lately just watching temps. When I'm crawling though with 17t I never have to worry about temps as long as I stay in first and let her rest every now and again. Temps are usually close to 100F where I am in the summer so most people would have to watch motor temps in that weather.

But your using 12T and having issues. Sounds like there might be other binding in your system or pinion gear mesh set too tight? Usually with 12T you should not have temp issues.

That's what I thought. I'll reset the mesh. Note: this is a new Dewalt motor. Do they run hot until they break in?

Honestly...in my experience mine did not run hot from the beginning. Although I did a break in cycle before I started pushing it. Never had an issue. But like I said that was my experience.

Checked the driveline it's free. I removed motor and the truck had no resistance to moving. I reset lash with a slightly wider gap. Hope it works

Sounds good. Also are your brushes seated well? One of my brushes that came with the motor originally was not seated well due to a weak spring retainer. Ran rough at first. May be a cause of excess heat as well?

Update: I purchased my Summit used with Mud Slingers already installed on beadlocks. Broke the tires and wheels down last night and found that the wheels were full of water. Several ounces each. The added weight appears to be what caused the motor to overheat. All better now

I'm always impressed with the cage/buggy look. Looks so great! and I'm sure it helps with ambient temps "under the hood"

Way cool. Love the wrap you used on the panels!! Nice stance too do you have a full interior in there? I can't tell.

I do have to ask, where did you get the driver from? My driver is a little small and I am looking for someone more scale. Yours looks great! Any info would be appreciated.

Driver is a Tamiya wild willy and no, not a full interior, just a "black cover" to hide the trans/motor/etc...

Thanks for the info. Think I will look to pick one of those drivers up and give it a try. How did you mount your driver in there?

Love how low your body is but i can't get mine that low. I have a full axial poison spider interior in mine and it prevents me from dropping the body any lower than it currently sits. Unless I want to chop up the interior which I can't brings self to do yet. I still like the look of the full interior.

Trade off I have to live with. Thanks.

I was looking into a full interior but like the stance way too much right now so it will stay like that for a while...

Just wanted to post some changes I've made to my Summit. I added a Traxxas rear chassis brace....just for the heck of it. I did break a few chassis' on my E-revo a few years ago when I had it....so why not brace the summit up. I also made my own front chassis brace out of some scrap aluminum, old spare truggy steering posts and some odds and end I had in some boxes.
I added a tool box. This is for some the hikes i do now and then. I will have a spare drive shaft, hex tools, wheel nut wrench, etc....in there. Sometimes I'm 30 minutes to an hour or so back in the woods on a trail...so I'll have the basic things i need for repair stored right on the truck.
I also strapped a small 4s lipo to the underside of the body. This is backup power .....just in case i hike too far and need a little extra juice for the return trip.
