I have seen a couple of posts on FarceBook, and a couple of other places were people who are just getting their TRX4s were opening up the transmissions for greasing and finding metal gears. Anyone here seen this?

Yep. Already covered in the main thread. Don't call Traxxas, they won't just give you metal gears. The plastic gears will hold up just fine. New Traxxas Scaler - Land Rover Defender 110 |

I bought the first one of the saleable RTR's my hobby shop got, I did get full metal gears. Their demo is the only one that got plastic internals. But I wouldn't mind. My Revo and E-Revo was filled with plastic and never a problem. |
