Back to surface RC, first crawler

So, I was a long time surface guy, racing MT, 1/8th buggy and 1/8th truggy, but I took a long break. Tried flying FPV drones, but never really scratched the right itch...

So, I picked up a TRX-4. So far, I’m really liking it! Initial impressions:

- Two speed makes it a great option for those that want to “bash”, while still being able to crawl.
- Locking diffs seem dumb. I ended up just running them locked all the time. This will be one of the first things I mod.
- Speaking of the drivetrain, the center shafts, specifically the splined center sections, seem very brittle (I broke one on my second pack)
- I love the scale look!
- However, it’s so freaking top heavy!

Overall, I’m loving it! Took it to the beach today and played on the rocks above the beach...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...866c23a1f3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0cf38dc0d9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...64b78319f2.jpg

Oh yeah, I forgot - The stock steering servo is shit.

Ownership of TRX-4 confirmed.

Was my first upgrade. After 10 min testing.

Stock Servo could not turn tire on this little step. Replaced it with a powerhd 20 kg waterproof that was in my part box. much more steering authority.[emoji41]

OK, I've upgraded the steering servo to a Savox HV, works much better! I wired it up so that power and ground come from the JST output on the ESC, limited to 7.4v, also ground from the receiver output along with the signal wire.

My problem is that at full lock (well past where endpoints should be set, servo is straining against full lock), when I hit the throttle, the servo centers and is unresponsive. My thought is that the amp draw is too high when the servo is straining against lock, but has anyone seen something like this?

I also stripped a bunch of crap off the body - The luggage tray, the spare tire, the crossmembers that support the inner fenders. After this, sidehill is WAY better and the looks don't suffer that much...

Probably need BEC with that servo.

It has one, limited at 7.4V (adjustable). I do think it's amperage limited, I'll have to solder up a better one. (I have dozens laying around, I use them a lot when building FPV quads.)

I picked up a Traxxas Link today, adjusted steering endpoints and it is behaving better. Still going to try a higher amp BEC and see what happens.
