Default Winch questions

Hey all,

I've been toying with the idea of adding a winch to my TRX-4, and I have a few questions for those that already have.
  1. Do you use your winch very often, or as often as you thought? Or did it just end up being a cool gimmick?
  2. If you do use it a lot, what types of situations is it the most helpful in? I'd be adding one to help get up and over steep inclines and ledges that I can't otherwise drive over...
  3. If you're using a servo winch, which one? If you made your own, how hard was it?
  4. How much torque do I really need in a servo winch? 250 oz/in? 300? 450?
Thanks for any and all input!

I have to admit that, in my case, it's for the look to be more scale. I think in some situation it could be used, like to help a friends truck... That is why I made it fonctionnal.

I have one, and use it. I built it from a 330 oz servo, but a 200 oz up should work.

I if you're going to compete, you will use it allot. Otherwise, it's for scale weight up front.

I run a 140oz cheapo servo with metal gears & bearings. Then I hooked it up with a Heyok controller with a remote.

Servo based winches are better than the scale winches. They are more powerful and more durable. Another benefit to a servo winch is that you dont need a huge bumper hanging off the front of your truck, screwing up your approach angles. The down side is that they can be harder to mount and you may have to get creative with routing the winch line. Rod ends are great for this.

I dont use the one on my comp truck as much as I should. Sometimes I simply forget about it but other times I'm just too stubborn. For a trail truck they can be fun, especially on a G6 where you have to help people up and over obstacles.
