Default TRX-4 Sunset Bronco Unboxing (and eventual build)

I called around and a local store got one in this morning so I ran down there and snagged it. Very excited! I took some pics while unboxing to share with you all.

First.. the box!

Here’s everything that was in the box...

The plastic covering is pinned to the body with the body clips

Just the body on its own. The sunset paintjob is done with decals, it appears the whole bronco is black.

Side moldings are bolted in and not glued

Rear tail light assembly followed by the front headlight and blinker. Curious if I can fit lights in here, haven’t yet inspected where the screw in the front headlight is going.

The chassis from front and back...

And all together, she sure has a face with a view

Short term plans include a mamba x, castle 2280kv motor, savox 1256tg with protek horn, ssd portal weights, samix brass hub carriers, and beadlocks wirh hyrax tires. Should have most of that by the end of next week so more pics to come as I upgrade.

I think I’m going to shelf this body, and get a spare to bash and crawl with. Anyone know what’s a good fit on this set up? I read that some of the others may not fit right even though the wheel base is a match.

Agreed. I’m very impressed. The GTR shocks are so smooth, great build quality.

I decided to see if my Denali bead locks with hyrax tires would fit and there is just enough clearance on the portals to work! Amain has them as fitting a trx4 so I’m happy with them. This will save me some money for now, the black wheel look ain’t too bad.

Keep stock wheel caps? I kind of like the contrast

It kind of sucks that the sunset part of the paint job is decals. I imagine they will get scratched/torn up at some point.
Maybe I'll just wait and get a clear body and links to put on my TRX4... I'm still jealous of your new truck.
Congrats!!

Honestly regarding the stock wheel caps or all black... it works either way.

Would be cool if someone eventually does some additional chrome pieces for this. Racetrack trim on a solid black body would be a sweet look for this one. I'd probably shelf it too though. Regardless of decal graphics... that sunset is just all kinds of sexy.

Congrats!

Did this quick little photoshop to see how it would look with the upper decals removed. Hmm..

Got the new parts delivered and installed. Switched out new motor, esc (mamba x + 2280kv), ssd portal hubs x 4, samix front hub carriers, and samix front knuckles. The only part not in yet is the samix shock spring under caps because I had a hard time getting the lower rod end off the shock and didn’t want to damage it. Any tips appreciated!

Impressed with the quality and fitment of the samix products. Everything was precise and tight.

Electronics all in...

Then I chromed the mirrors with rustoleum, this was a pain but came out okay. Unfortunately once I ran it I noticed the back ring on the Denali bead locs would ever so slightly rub the portal cover. Back to stock wheels and tires for now.

Lastly, got my basher body painted and installed. Not sure what I’ll do about the bumper situation. Bronco bumpers will be shelfed and not a fan of the fit with the stock bumpers from the defender on here. Had to do a little fender trimming to get the fit.

Since it's release, I thought that chrome side-views would be a really cool option. Looks so much more correct that way... love it.

Dunno if this would work but maybe sandwich the shafts in between two little pieces of wood or thick cardboard or wrap them with a few layers of painters tape... then use some vice-grips ( clamped tight but not too tight) to hold them in place while turning the rod-end.

Thanks man. I think they look more in place too. Considered chroming the grill too, but trying to sand and get that paint even would be a challenge.

I see what you’re suggesting with the shafts, may have to give that a try.

I like that the Hyrax tires fit! I didn't try mine yet because I thought they'd be too large. So maybe I do have some good tires options at home already. Thanks for those photos.

The top strip removed does look good. I wonder what it would look like with only the center stripes removed.

Samix parts look great! I would have bought their portal covers if they weight more. The fact that SSD covers weight more than most and the fact that they are already pre-blackened made me choose those as well.

Hmm. I like it without only the head band. If/when they start selling the decal sheets I may have to try that out.

x2 on the SSD comment. They weighed quite a bit more than the samix counter part. 55g per pair compared to 150g. Couldn’t pass that up.

Alright, I may have a problem. But needing a “guest” crawler is reasonable, right?

This one will just get a hobby wing 1080, Power hd servo, and maybe a little bit o weight.

I was dead set on the red/black Bronco; but the sunset with the upper decal removed looks great... especially with black wheels.

Chromed the mirrors on big red, here’s pics if you’re curious.

How did you chrome the mirrors? Paint?

Finally got the spring cups in, all together the samix and ssd pieces added 508g (1.125 lbs) to the rig. About 162g added to the rear and 346g added to the front.

I sanded them down as best I could and then sprayed them with rustoleum bright coat Metallic finish. It dries slower than the tamiya paints so I had to wait a while longer between coats and let the paint cure for a day before picking them up, otherwise the paint would smudge and pick up finger print indentations.

Good tech to know. I wish Traxxas would've included chrome mirrors as that's how I remember them on the full size trucks. But this is a good DIY workaround.
