Default Stock shock tuning / lower cap mod.

Here is what I did to get the stiction dialed out of my shocks. This may be apparent to some members but it wasn't to me and may not be for the new TRX4 owners looking for help.
The consensus is to unscrew the lower cap to relieve the pressure on the xrings and the black plastic spacer that sits in between them. But how much? How much is too much? This is what I did in addition to using 10wt oil-

Unscrewed it about yay much, and cycled it a bunch- the feel is much better at this point.

Compressed all the way and then tightened until I had a small gap between cap and rod end(so the rod end wont bottom out onto the cap)

Wrap the gap with a piece of the hobbywing decals that came with your 1080, you have a 1080 right?

Now they feel like the shocks everybody is saying are fantastic.

Interesting way to go about it. My only suggestion would be to maybe use some gorilla tape for longevities sake.

Unscrew the X-ring retainer cap, lube the X-rings with Green Slime, reinstall the cap to finger tight, loosen the cap 1/4 turn. Done!

That definitely makes a difference too, and at $4 it's a steal.

I'm actually thinking of going up to 15 or 20wt they move so freely now.

Or use a thinner spacer between the 2 X-rings, thats what I've done and it accomplishes the very same thing, less squish of the X-rings & smoother operation.

Thread here with pics and part numbers Has anyone rebuilt their shocks yet?

I'll be sanding the black spacer down next time I experiment and change the fluids. IF I can get the rod end unscrewed from the shock shaft, mine are on there good. Is there a good trick for that so I don't scratch the shaft?

I use the Protec shock shaft pliers, they're great https://www.amainhobbies.com/protek-...k-8267/p248643

I agree, a good pair of shock pliers are great plus they can also install/remove balls in rod ends. They are a must have IMO.

I found myself using these shock shaft pliers way more than I would have ever imagined.

In a pinch you can wrap your pliers up in something soft.

FYI...slickoleum is very good too, and much cheaper than green slime. Used in mountain bikes and motocross bikes suspension so definitely not afraid of dirt.
