Default TRX-4 kit version shocks

Anyone know the length of the shocks that come with the kit? VP has these 90mm shocks on they're site under "TRX-4" parts.

The GTS shocks are 90mm.
Why would you want to replace them, next to the Big-Bores they are probably one of the best shocks you can have on there.
Traxxas offers a total of 6 different spring rates for fine tuning.

Cool thanks. Not necessarily looking to replace them. Just finished the build and haven't even run it yet. Just looking at options. Great to hear that the stock ones are the best to have on there.

I just sold an extra set I had to my brother for his SCX10.2 and thats all he is talking about. Tons of guys in the Ascender and SCX10.2 sections are buying them for their builds. I have had my Defender since last June and not a single shock has leaked yet. When you do get around to running it come back to this thread, I'll post up below a list of the springs below if you want to fine tune it.

I just built my Kit and used the "No Stripe" springs front and rear and filled them with 20wt oil, I can't wait for my spools to come in so I can drive this one.

Pair of GTS shocks #8260
.......or, look on ebay. A brand new set of 4 with springs from a "take-off" ran me $46.00

And at $6.00 for a pair of springs, tuning the ride won't break the bank.

Standard spring rates that come on the TRX4

no stripe .45 #8041 (Front)
green stripe .54 #8040 (Rear)

Option spring rates

yellow stripe .22 #8042
white stripe .30 #8043
orange stripe .39 #8044
blue stripe .61 #8045

I can't believe people look for upgrades before running they're trucks. An aftermarket part isn't an upgrade just because someone says so.

Well believe it. Relatively new to the hobby and seems like most rigs come with shocks that are less than stellar. Plus upgrading is fun for me. Just glad I was corrected and told that the stock shocks are good and recommend to be kept.

I have had a fair few Axial rigs and their shocks were awful. Leaking out of the box. So you are right to ask the question. Luckily Traxxas has been in the game a long time and knows how to build shocks. I run the Traxxas rear shocks off a Rustler on all four corners of my Jeep/Wraith. Reliable and cheap/easy to maintain. :-) The TRX stock shocks are still leak free after 70 miles of trailing so far.

Awesome that's great to hear. Well now I need to come up with something else to do while I wait for my Bronco body.

Best hop up I have found is the Bow House RC LCG battery tray. Really helps lower centre of gravity and body roll. Just make sure your batts fit as there is not as much room as stock.

IMO, the best first mod would be to install SSD portal weights front and rear. Once you start driving it, future mods will make themselves apparent.

Yep Traxxas knows how to build a shock unlike Axial and RC4WD...

Of note everyone and their grandma has a set of portal weights out for the TRX-4. Search around and you'll find alternatives, since the SSD units aren't in stock.

That being said, minor thread hijack (though still on the topic of shocks and adjustments). I recently went to a firmer foam for my tires, and noticed that the truck is more "bouncy" now, like it's suspension is too stiff. Running stock springs and oil. Should I go with a lighter weight oil and softer springs to compensate?

Start with lighter oil.

Springs hold up the weight. Shock oil/ shock pistons controls how fast they move.

I have found the weaknesses of the TRX GTS shocks, they are horrible for droop set ups, and can't be mounted upside down at all. Decent shock, I still believe the tried and true Big Bores simply out do the GTS shocks by a long shot. But hey, best Scale shock that comes on an RTR truck for sure.

If you must get new shocks, and that isn't really necessary I recommend: Kyosho Velvets (SuperShafty has some, but once gone they are gone forever), Dravtech's version of basically big bores modded (available at DLux for us US folks), Egressor Axial/Big Bore combination shocks (RCBros has them). Hands down each of these 3 are better than Big Bores or these GTS shocks.

My GTS shocks were disassembled and cleaned then reassembled and lubed the O-ring with green slime and refilled with 10wt shock oil. I have no complaints with my GTS shocks and a droop setup.

10wt isn't going to droop well, too fast. It's more a flop than a droop set up. At least it is when you fix the over compression of the x-rings by the black spacer. Stiction from the black spacer I guess could make the 10wt feel thicker it that isn't resolved.
