Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor I don’t know if somebody already found-out, and I couldn’t get search to work here ( api-call errors), but. There is a cheaper way to replace the stock motor that came with the TRX-4 than forking-over $20.- for a fancy label. Just check out gearbest’s site. It’s the “Surpass 550/21t” ( I got myself two of them. Useful for other projects, among it a Heng Long Leopard with gearboxes for 550-sized motors) It looks completely the same as the Traxxas offering, longer pinion-side shaft and all. Performance seems to be the same, be it that it’s not timed, and thusly runs the same both directions. Makes for a great replacement for a slightly faster trailing truck. It even comes with properly soldered silicone leads. Just cheaper surpressors Oh, and it’s black. I have good experiences with Surpass’ offerings. I use several of their brushed motors for my vintage re-re’s, they work like a charm, and are cheap as chips. Here’s the link: https://www.gearbest.com/rc-car-parts/pp_1575962.html It’s for the Dutch market, this gearbest page. But I bet, without the big 21% VAT we pay overhere, it’s even cheaper for the USA, even with the threatened 10% tariff on Chinese goods. |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor This motor is only rated to 7.4V. I believe the Traxxas motor is rated to 14V. This might be a good option for people running a 2S LiPo, but no good for people running 3S. |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor I don’t think there’s any difference in wind and wire thickness, brushes seem to be the same material, rotor is balanced and collector is bound to the winds exàctly the same way. I’ll try running one of them at 11.1. We’ll see. My gut-instinct tells me there’s no difference whatsoever. Besides all of that, with 13000rpm @ 7.2v, 14,4v makes for 26000rpm. Given that the motor is about 1800kv, for 11,1v that leads to about 18800- say 19000 rpm on a good pack. Not exactly over the top for a simple brushed motor with bushings. Plùs the sheer amount of iron in the can makes for good heat-dissipation. And, in the end, I’m none too confident in Traxxas’ claims afa their motors and gearing-choices go. Too many burnt-up 12- and 21-turns with their ‘claimed’ voltages with their offerings. Let alone the fact that Traxxas stubbornly refuses to tell the àctual specs ( wire thickness, max allowed wattage at load, amps unloaded, amps at best eficiëncy, Nm at max efficiëncy, stuff like that ) for their brushed motors. Well, they are -imho- exàctly afraid that people find-out they are getting fleeced, and go search for cheaper variations without the Traxxas-sticker. But, then again, most brands pull that trick. I have to be honest here: I absolutely detèst Traxxas electronics, most of it is bottom-of-the-barrel crapola with fancy stickers and housings *puts on flame-retardant suit* , but am absolutely vèry fond of their cars as a base-platform. They’re original, use good materials, and every now & then get daring.. I mean, who had the guts to bring-out a fully RTR funny car?? It kinda flopped, but at least they tried to be original. Edit: Just found out Surpass àlso makes a 12 turn 550 brushed motor, oh, ànd a 35 turn 550 brushed motor. Well.. if I ever feel the need to turn my driveshafts into pretzels... :ror: |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor Any updates on this Surpass motor on 3S? |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor why do the experimenting when you have a holmes 550 can drop in motor for 19.99? |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor I went with the Holmes Hobbies 550 Can TrailMaster motor for $20. |

You are not paying for a fancy label when buying a Holmes. And if $8.00 is an issue for your budget you are in the wrong hobby. |

Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor ...allegedly stronger magnets, and bearings instead of bushings. I have 3 of the HH Trailmaster Sport 550's and have been happy with them, but at the end of the day, I'm not going to give someone else a hard time for buying a different (cheaper) sealed can motor. I, myself, ran a few Electrifly 600's, several Titan's, and even a couple different Redcat motors before landing on the 27t HH. For me, it mostly came down to the turn count I wanted, and availability. |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor Stronger magnets, face bearing, better brush compound, zero timing, specific width brush to jive with zero timing without being too weak or wearing too fast. |

Wiring it up tonight, got it for the specific reason of not needing to be concerned with timing when carrying an extra one in the parts bin. |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor In regards to the magnetic strength, A gauss meter can measure the mesh of field strength. My magnets in the Trailmaster measure between 115 and 110mT across the entire face. The trx motors measure 115 to 110 in the middle and taper down to 50 or 60mT at the edge of the face. |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor Sorry but can somebody tell me about "timing" these motors have or do not have? |

I have been in this hobby since 1987, and no, $8.00 is not an issue. When is the last time you tossed a $10 bill in the toilet and flushed it? Yeah, I didn't think so. So obviously $10 is something to you. As I stated earlier, I did not say that this was particularly the case with the Holmes vs. the Surpass. However, I'm not blindly going to spend and extra $8.00 + shipping on something without some reasonable basis. That's all I asked. Open the Surpass motor and give me something concrete. Otherwise, you are just speculating. |

Now what the Surpass has internally, we don't know yet. We shall see. I can only guess, but then I'd be guilty of my own accusations. |
Re: Cheap replacement for Traxxas 21t 550 motor The most likely case is that it is just like the TRX stock motor, maybe even lower grade magnets. I've yet to come across another sealed can that has quality ones like mine. |

All the specs, including timing, are detailed here. https://holmeshobbies.com/motors/bru...sport-550.html |
