Default Is my TRX-4 Motor Done?

Disclaimer: Newbie alert...

Long story short, I may have had some rubbing on new wheels (I thought I ground down enough). I was crawling, and saw some smoke and everything stopped.

I took the wheels off, turned back on and nothing. I took the motor off and turned back on to see if it spins and nothing again.

All servos and steering work fine.

I just wanted to check and see if there are any other "tests" I can do and make sure my motor is gone before I start researching a new one.

I'm assuming this isn't covered by Traxxas warranty considering it's most likely my own fault.

Thanks

It's probably the motor, but it could be your ESC as well. On the plus side, the Titan 550 motors are pretty cheap if it ends up being the motor. Hook the motor directly to a battery with some jumper leads. Connect them firmly to the battery terminals, the connect to one of the motor leads firmly. With the other motor lead, just touch the other lead coming from the battery. If the motor doesn't jump/spin, it's cooked.

Don’t buy another traxxas 550. For 19 bucks get the Holmes hobby 550 21t.

Agreed. About the same cost as the Titan.

Are there any trade-offs if I go with a Holmes hobby 550 21t or is it just a better replacement than the stock titan?

Both are pretty cheap and it looks like I have enough ebay bucks to only spend a few dollars!

Just a no brainer upgrade. You’ll be happy. Especially if you add a hobbywing 1080 esc to go with it. $60 and a great upgrade. If your stock esc isn’t fried you’ll be able to recoup a good chunk of that in the process by selling it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will have to do some research on esc's, I need to learn more...

Not much research necessary. Buy the HW1080 and HH Trailmaster Sport 550 21t w/9t pinion and you will have arguably the best brushed setup for the money!

Question on the Trailmaster motor- do you have to reverse the channel 2 setup since the Titan (stock) motor is reversed? Or if installing the trailmaster do you simply swap the wires opposite of the Titan?

I've got about 230 miles of trail running on my TRX-4 since i bought it and i'm still using the stock motor.

No, just reverse the wires on the motor. The Trailmaster has zero timing so it can be run in either direction without harming the motor.

I think the HH 27t is better suited to the TRX with stock gearing. :-)
