Steering servo...give it to me straight!
 

Okay, I’ve searched and read and searched and read...I run a hitec servo in my summit and I’m happy with it...I don’t have a bec on it either...I just got my sport and want to put a nice quality servo on it...preferably not have to run a bec...I’m leaning towards hitec because of my experience but what is the best option...give it to me straight...cut and dry! :flipoff:"thumbsup"

Honestly very few aftermarket servos will be very effective on the stock ESC, as it's BEC is only rated for 1a.
Good servos will draw 3-5a on full pull.
Having said that, the "cheap" 20-23kg servos for $20-40 on eBay and Amazon will do fine.

I run the hitec 8385th on the sport with original esc and motor.. With no problems.. No bec

Holy crap that is an expensive servo - much better options are out there for the money.

You could just get a SHV500 v2 Holmes Hobbies and connect it directly to the main LiPo for much less money, no BEC needed.

It's a brushless servo that's even more powerful than the Hitec.



EDIT: A popular budget servo is the DS3218, much better than the stock Traxxas, draws very little power.

Buy a couple,they run less then $18 on Amazon.

I've got one in my quite a bit heavier than stock 3S-powered Ascender that's lasted me a year so far.

Also be aware that the stock TRX4 electronics run at 6v so you really need a servo which is also rated at 6v to be compatible.

I scored a fairly good deal on the Pro-Modeler ECO POWER waterproof servo. 337ozs at 6v, 400+ozs at 7.4v. $40-ish.

This.

A lot of servos use more than 1a at no load and some cheap servos that claim 400+ oz of torque can get up around 8a at stall.

Why would anyone want to pay money for a good servo then handicap it by only giving it 1/4 or less of its needed power? Is soldering 2 wires for a BEC really that hard?

I second this. I've got like a half dozen of these in various trucks and they work beautifully.

I would, however, waterproof these yourself as they don't appear to be fully sealed (had one die of water exposure and I only splashed around in puddles).

Say I throw a castle creations bec on it...I see they are pre programmed at 5.1v...does this mean I’d have to buy the software as well so I could program it to 6.0v ?

Or do like I did, find a buddy that has the Link that can program it for you. "thumbsup" Your local hobby shop guys might be able to help you with it. :)
I just ordered a HW-1080 for mine, but I plan to leave it's bec at 6v to run the Traxxas electrics and keep my Castle powering the steering servo. :D

We've got a bazillion of those ds3218's amongst the group (a half-dozen? LOL) and one of them is in a very heavy TRX Defender with stock electrics - goes great. That's what I would put in it.

I would spend the rest of the money in your pocket on a HobbyWing 1080 speed controller - they really do work nicely. Has to the best $40 you can spend on a brushed-motor RC. [shrug]

If you're a comp-crawler with yours then you might consider the promodeler or HH. Both are outstanding. But they both need some external power for their higher amp draw.

Unfortunately, the traxxas controller has a 1ah bec. Wow! :shock:

There's something to be said for programmable servos. I run a hitec 7950 at 7.4v with a castle bec. Being able to squeeze every degree of throw out of it without causing binding issues is worth it for me. (I guess coming from the super class world I'm just used to spending those servo dollars....)

Im doing the same on my TF2. I love the strength of my savox (mine is 500oz). But it's a whiny bastard.

My TRX4 has the 25kg servo directly on a 1080WP with no BEC too.


Love that ESC for what it is.

I know a lot of people complain about the Savox noise but once the truck is about 10 ft or more away I can't hear it anyway.

OK, straight, cut and dry. Holmes BLS SHV500v2 no BEC, wire it dierectly into your ESC battery plug with the included JST pig tail.
