| topher builds a(nother) TRX4
Getting one last build in for the year, this time going back to one of the first trucks I owned, a trx4. I originally had a trx4 bronco, it was one of my favorite trucks after putting a few upgrades on it. I sold that one as a slider earlier this year to help fund the other builds and have missed having one ever since. This will technically be my 4th trx4. I had another bronco that I bought shortly after the first one, so my friend could drive it. But didn’t keep that one too long. Then I built a trx4 sport kit which was eventually converted to the trx10.2 and has now been all parted out. With this one I decided to get my favorite parts from the past builds and put them all in this one. So after some time gathering parts, I have this whole mess of fun to get going on. Electronics will be a mamba x with slate 1900kv motor and a hh v3 servo, all ran on 4S. This will be my first 4S rig. Going to start with the chassis and axles today and will try to post pics as the build comes along. Still no idea what I’m going to do for paint yet, or the body for that matter. I think I’ll start with the sport body in the kit and possibly work the mst fj body on it down the road. Last edited by Topher Builds; 12-17-2020 at 02:38 PM. |

Nice man! I love the trx4 chassis, it's so capable even out the box. I have 2 right now, a blazer I put a JKU body on and wheels but pretty close to stock and a bronco with a lift kit, 2.2s and a velenion system and a few other odds and ends. Both work really good for me on really wet rocky ares like low streams. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |

Nice to see you going back to your roots. Your trx 10.2 was a fave of mine. Anxious to see what you'll do with this one. Are you keeping the portals? Sent from my LM-G710VM using Tapatalk |

Thanks dudes! And Max-D yes keeping the portals on this one. Got the front axle done for now. I used most of the stock internals except the ring and pinion, and aftermarket parts for the rest of it. Went with yeah racing axle housing. Ssd portal covers. Samix v2 chubs. djx shock mounts. Treal knuckles. HR high clearance steering link. Traxxas overdrive ring and pinion. Sweet, another TB build! Nice to see another TRX-4 build! Always enjoyed watching your other ones conquering some ridiculous lines! Great rigs and I’m still in love with mine even though it seems to see more shelf time than rock time here lately! Looks like you’ve got a lot of cool goodies to make another great performing rig! Love the look of the completed axle! Nice and beefy! Liked and subscribed and can’t wait to see what you have planned for it! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Some serious beef on that axle! Always good to have a TRX in the fleet. Great trucks. |

Definitely a beefy axle! The TRX-4 kit is one of the best builds. Everything just goes together so nicely. |

I appreciate the comments gents. The front is one beefy axle for sure, as you can see I took a slightly different approach with the rear. Stuck with the yeah racing housing but didn’t add any other weight. There is an underdrive gear inside (and an OD gear up front). Added some aluminum portal mounts from eBay that allow me to outboard and mount the shocks to the portal mount instead of the shock mounts. The front axle has a similar feature on the Samix v2 chubs Tim, I agree this kit is a joy. From the way the parts and hardware are packaged together, consistency in hardware sizes, and of course the fit and finish. Even with parts from 7 different manufacturers in the front axle I didn’t have one fitment issue. |

How heavy is the front axle compared to the rear? Sent from my LM-G710VM using Tapatalk |

I’d estimate the front is about 300g heavier than the rear.

Yep, axles to make the rock crumble in fear. I imagine they help keep the Bronco tires below that big beautiful body. Looks great Topher, thanks for bringing another build! There sure are a lot of good crawler platforms these days. The TRX4 really deserves some credit for that. Seems to me Traxxas lit a fire under the ass of the competition. |

A little more progress, got the chassis together. I forgot the sport didn’t come with the front battery tray, but since I’m using the Samix shock towers I’ll need to figure something else out anyway. I may work on fitting the pack to the tray opposite of the esc and receiver once I get electronics in. A keen eye may notice an extra pan hard mount in the rear. No plans for 4ws but I had those towers around as spares after pulling them off an old trx4. You can see how much the pan hard mount bent on these HR towers (do not recommend) but they’ll do just fine in the rear. The Samix pan hard mount is much sturdier. Building shocks and mounting the links to the chassis today, will try to knock out some electronics work before mounting the axles as well. Still need to figure out paint! Quote:

Looking good, and holy cow 300g? If that doesn’t keep the front planted, I don’t know what will lol. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Didn’t get as much done today since I slacked a bit, built the shocks. Used a 42.5wt oil but it feels a little thick for the pistons in these shocks. Might drop down to 25 but will give this a shot first. Here’s a pic of the rear suspension to illustrate the out boarding of the shocks to the rear portal mounts. I ended up switching the rear shock towers to some that look like stock but are aluminum. Flipped them around to give the shocks a little bit of a forward lean. That’s the idea |

I have to agree, I like the shocks mounted on the portal too. How come you only put Samix shock towers up front and not in the rear? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
