Default Sport Overdrive Question

I'm building a TRX-4 Sport kit. As I'm building it, should I install overdrive gears or just leave it stock. This truck is a pure crawler, no trailing.

I put OD in the front and UD in the rear of my Sport and it's a trail truck.

Cool. I'm installing it then. I'll definitely do UD later. Funds are low right now.

That's fine.

On NYE, I noticed my TRX-4 Sport was bouncing on a rock during a climb. OSRC said he noticed one of his trucks started hopping when he installed both OD and UD gears so it's something to keep an eye out for. It's a very interesting observation!

Just had OD installed.... with the wheels turning at different speeds and great traction, you can certainly get some hop while climbing.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I will probably drive it with just the OD gears in for a while.

Is this the case with any manufacturers truck with OD, or is it more prone with the trx4?

I stand corrected. That's what I get for relying on my memory...

It made complete sense when you said it.

There's only one way to find out if you like it and if it works for you in your situations - try it. I've removed more than one "upgrade" because I didn't like how it changed whatever truck it was installed on.

That shouldn't make too much of a difference. Different suspension setups would be more or less prone to bouncing though.

Don't overthink it. As I stated, just install it and try it out. That's the only way you'll know for sure if it works for you.

It's not a trail truck. Pure crawling only

I've never driven a truck with OD installed on it. Should I throw the stock gears in first and drive it, then the overdrive so I can tell the difference?

I'd say yes if you've never used OD gears before.

Awesome sauce! Thanks for the quick reply gentleman. I'll drive it stock first as I don't know anyone with a stock truck, then I'll throw the OD gears in so I can tell the difference.

Cool. It's not all that difficult to change anyway.

It'll be interesting to see what you think. Just pay close attention to the behalf of the truck. Also, make sure you test both setups out on the same obstacles.

I recently installed the underdrive ring and pinion in my rear diff. I am pleased with the performance results so far.

Did you leave the front stock?

Yes. The goal is ultimately to get the front wheels spinning a touch faster than the rear. There is a slightly larger gain out of the UD vs the OD gears so I started there.

LOL that was a typo. I mean behavior. Pay close attention to how the truck acts both before and after you install the OD gears so you can see how it changes and determine if you like it.
