Hobbywing 1080 SOS!

Hoping to get some input.

My Racer's edge adapter just arrived. I connected the Hobbywing to the battery to test. Hobbywing also connected to motor. I turned it on and heard a beep and then a puff of smoke came out of the round black solenoid on the ESC.

I have both blue and yellow wires from the ESC connected to the red area of the motor and thinking I have both connected to positive? I did not have directions for connecting the wires to the motor but thinking with red plated area and dark gray area of the motor are to show positive and negative?

Did I just kill my new ESC?

If you let the magic smoke escape from your ESC then, yes, it's most likely fried. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yeah... You booboo'ed and fried it.

You REALLY need the directions for this. It sounds like you connected the battery to one negative leads for the ESC and motor, which will blow things up. If you look on the case, near the wires, there is a key for what goes where. The red and black wires have (+) and (-) symbols next to them, these should have been ran to the battery connector, and matched the red and black battery wires. The other two go to the motor, and can be reversed, but at no time should they have been connected to either side of the battery.

There are 4 wires: red and black go to the battery plug, yellow and blue to the motor, where the battery wires can not be swapped, the motor wires can (and maybe even must depending on the model).
The motor wires should not be shorted or connected to any battery pole.


The thing between the wires is a capacitor, and if it blew steam the thing is fried.

You shorted both motor wires of the ESC on one pin of the motor?
That alone would kill the ESC, but where did you connect the other motor pin to?

Motor red and Motor black were the right poles, one should have been connected to the yellow ESC wire, the other to the blue. Which one where makes no difference except motor direction, so try and eventually reverse them.

Also, my 1080 had a paper in the box where the connections were shown...
