Default Why?

Why is the cost of an under/over drive gear so expensive? How can they justify the cost of something so small. Yes I can afford it I just begrudge paying over the top. Seems the smaller our rcs are getting the more expensive they are getting.

LMAO!!! I have wondered that same thing so many times! That's why I don't have them. Just can't justify it. Especially when my rig crawls great like it is.

Let's see you make a R&P set for $40.

Simple answer is it is really hard to machine bevel gears this small. Yes it is expensive, but traxxas quality is worth it to me.

Plus- niche market and they knew demand would be high long before they even hit the shelves.

Now $112 for 2 trx4 diff covers... THAT'S expensive!

I think it’s mainly because it’s a traxxas part. While their stock replacement parts are usually reasonably priced, their hop ups are often overpriced. For example, take a look at their beadlock wheels. I think a set ends up being around $80 with the rings... for plastic wheels with plastic hex hubs. The stock ring and pinion replacement sells for $15. I know they make a lot more of those and likely get a better price, but the upgrade is 266% the price of the stock gears. I don’t doubt if another company cared to make one it would be cheaper, but at this point maybe not worth it.

With all that being said, I run both OD/UD and have no complaints. Great quality like mentioned above.

Exactly.

These gears are precision machined and then hardened. That costs a lot of money and then you add, I don't know, about 30% profit on top of it.

The smaller they make it, the more expensive it is to make...

Hot racing makes a set but they cost $39 each

The ring and pinion I looked up for $15 was apparently for a revo.

No idea why these are so expensive.

I don't buy into it cost so much to make. These things are mass produced which brings prices way down. These aren't one offs. The trx4 is one if the best crawlers on the market right now and I think that's why the price is so high as its supply and demand.

The stock ring and pinion look to be sintered metal, that's cheap to produce and great for high volume. The under/over drive ring and pinions are machined which is a significantly more expensive process. Especially as it looks like the may be heat treated or coated with something.
