Default Defender Shocks

This is the first time I've taken off the shocks of my defender. While I try to rebuild them, I notice they bind when tighten the bottom cap. I have build a sport kit and those shocks were very smooth. It seems like the black spacer between the 2 o-rings is a bit too thick. The outer o-ring is not flush with the shock body, so when the cap is tightened, the o-rings would thighten the shock shaft causing the bind. My question is that is it the spacers are too thick or do I need to replace the o-rings?

I think a lot of people leave the bottom cap a 1/4 turn loose to keep the o-rings from getting too tight. That and some good oring lube.

Thank you. I just found another thread about the shocks. I will try that tomorrow.

I don't like leaving the cap loose and shouldn't be that way. I used a thinner spacer and the shocks are smooth and leak free.

The original defender shock spacer is 3 x 2.75mm. I used 2mm spacer and green slime.

I agree with this. I went even further and sanded the spacers down to 1.75mm on my Sport Kit shocks.

It's not a bad idea to get an assortment of 3mm spacers and shims.

I found some spacers and they are working fine now. I don't remember having this issue with the sport kit. I am in the process of putting the Proline C10 body on it. I am using the 12.3 wheelbase conversion kit with the fenders.

Work in progress. The cab fits without any modification after I take out the battery tray. I would have to cut out part of the bed to fit. Not sure what I want to do there yet.

I have the 78 Chevy stepside and use the bowhouse lcg battery tray as nd I didn't have to cut much. There is also the blazer/ bronco inner fenders that are set up to use a battery between them that could be an option
