speed controller issues again

I tried turning on my speed controller today. It has been sitting many days . It went into low voltage mode again so I called traxxas up. The guy said it only takes like a half a second to hold down the button on the speed controller to turn it on. I holded it down to long I found out. I think the traxxas speed controller is to touchy so I ordered a axial one today. What do you guys think of the traxxas trx-4 sport speed controller?

Throw it in the trash and get a hobbywing 1080. Your problems will be gone.

Re: speed controller issues again

The XL5 have two issues.

1. The BEC is too weak, 1A is just not enough juice to push a reasonably powered servo.
2. The button sticks, which has been a problem for years.

The HW 1080 is a great replacement, you just have to wire up the external power connector if you are running the Traxxas lighting controller.

the hobbywing requires allot of effort to program. I seen part of a youtube video on how to program it. I ordered a axial crawler speed controller instead.

It's really not all that much. I'll give you the numbers I use. You could have it setup in 5 mins. The program card is simple

NO, it does not!

Changing from the Traxxas ESC to the Axial ESC is simply moving from one mediocre ESC to another mediocre ESC. The HW 1080 is an actual upgrade.

Re: speed controller issues again

Wait, start over why is the ESC not powering up? What has been sitting for many days? did you leave the battery plugged in?

Are you using a fully charged battery?

No ESC will work without a charged battery, theres a LVC (low voltage cutoff) built into almost all ESC's. This safety feature will shut the ESC down once the voltage drops to a certain point to avoid damaging the battery.

And to answer the question about the Traxxas ESC, its just as bad as the Axial one. Dont miss the opportunity to upgrade, HW 1080 is a great budget option as suggested by others. Programming and ESC isn't as difficult as your making it out to be, theres not much to adjust and you'll typically only change settings a few times possibly only once.

I 110% agree on the hobbywing not hard to program.

There are multiple YouTube videos that explain what each setting is and what setting value to use and why.

Its really nice since you just plug in the tuning card.

Im brand new to RC and fully understand how it can be daunting but I programmed a mamba x using castle link over the weekend. And John Holmes was on the tv explaining the process and why as I followed along step by step on the laptop.

What you gain in the upgrade, versatility, benefits and value of the HW 1080 esc vast outweighs the difficulty.

I don't know if I can get the axial speed controller cancelled. I had a scx10 ii with that speed controller. it worked fine but I didn't run the truck much. maybe 10 times or less since I bought it new. it was the blue 1969 chevy blazer body.

I will try to cancel the axial speed controller and get the hobby wing one. what numbers do you use?

Well maybe in your case you'd be fine with it. It will work, thats for sure. You just miss out on being able to fine tune things, run higher voltage, run different motor types or running a lower turn motor which again you seem to be okay without.

For those of us heavier into crawling the stock ESC's are garbage and often yanked out before even using them. Which is why its so foreign to replace stock electronics with more stock electronics.

Pups? You mean cookies? That's normal for most websites I thought?

For the Hobbywing ESC that's been recommended you can order it from many places, here's a link to the manufacturers listing for it:

I will hook up the card tonight or tomorrow and get the numbers I'm currently using. They have been the best setup so far. There's a thread here on the forum that's not very old with a bunch of people's 1080 program numbers. Here's the link http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/elect...-settings.html

pups are tracking malware. they track what you do and where you go on your computer and send it to companies so they can find out what you are interested in so they can match you with stuff your interest in so they can sell you stuff.

Re: speed controller issues again

I just got my first TRX-4. On the second drive ever (maybe 2 hours on first day, 10 minutes into the second) the ESC just died. Completely. Not low voltage mode, no led activity no matter what I do. Tried different batteries. Checked all of the connections on the receiver. It just won't do anything. I think these ESCs aren't great.

I emailed Traxxas...but I also ordered a hobbywing 1080.
