Default 20vmki's TRX-4 Sport Buildup!

OBLIGATORY FINISHED PHOTO

BACKSTORY

After getting back into R/C with a couple of 1/16 E-Revo's for me and my son last Christmas, which are great fun BTW, I eventually decided to get a crawler for some slower paced more technical fun. I've taken my 1:1 truck out a few times and really enjoyed it, and I figured this would be cheaper than buying a bunch of truck parts, right? I hope

So at first I ordered the RTR Sport and was waiting for it to come off backorder when I did some digging and found that my LHS had the Sport Assembly Kit. I had initially ruled out the assembly kit because I was going to stay strictly in the Traxxas universe, and buying the parts separate (ESC, motor, RX, servo) would have been more expensive. But, giving it more thought I knew I would enjoy putting it together and started researching electronics options.

This build would turn out being a lot of firsts for me, first kit, first electronics selection, and first painting. So I made a spreadsheet (doesn't everything need a spreadsheet?) to track what electronics I wanted, where they were in stock, and what the price delta would be.
  • Motor: Traxxas Titan 550 (3975R)
  • ESC: HobbyWing QUICRUN WP1080
  • RX: Traxxas 5-Channel TQi 2.4GHz Micro Receiver (651
  • Servo: Traxxas High Torque 400 (2255)
  • Batteries: Traxxas 2S 2200mAh (2820X) [I wanted something I could share with my 1/16 E-Revo VXL]
Some of my justifying logic for the price increase over the RTR kit is as follows. Research showed one of the first things I'd want to replace is the servo, which for a high torque version would require a BEC. So I decided to go with the WP1080 instead, with a built-in BEC that can run the servo (running only at 6V to keep my Traxxas RX happy)

After getting all of my hardware picked, and confirming LHS stock, I proceeded to cancel my back order and place my new orders! About a week later I had my parts, let the build begin!

THE BUILD

The buildup of the assembly kit went pretty smooth, all the parts were there and in the right bags.

My workspace:

The Kit:

Axles, Frame, and Transmission Built (also dyed the diff covers black):

3D printed tray for the HW1080, and 3D printed spacers for the sliders:

Motor wired up, awaiting Traxxas ESC connector and Servo:

At this point I'd say the build is done, and I quickly moved into making updates and modifications!

LCG BATTERY TRAY

I printed a Low Center of Gravity battery tray that I found on Thingiverse, but I found that it was hitting some of the rear linkage at full compression (hard to see in the photo):

So I made a few updates to the model and printed it again, final product:

The servo and ESC connector came in, time to go flex!

I also did the bumper mods where you flip both bumper mounts upside down, move the rear to the front, and trim the heck out of the body!

If you can't tell by now, I like taking pictures

I got some battery straps to hold my baby batteries safe in the tray:

I also love tip-ties, keeping everything neat, also I added an old servo connector to the HW1080 to protect the pins.

Check out that 3D printed gas tank!

TACOMA BODY

Ah yes, this is what I was waiting for, RC4WD's 2001 Tacoma double cab body, my plan is out, time for a mini version of my truck to take shape!

My first time working with an unfinished body, I was a bit worried as to how it would all turn out, cutting, painting, gluing.

Size comparison with the stock TRX-4 Sport Body:

I got some of the trimming done and it sits on the chassis okay. This is a NARROW body, so some more work was going to need to be done.

Stock sliders had to come off and on the passenger side the receiver box was getting in the way, so I moved it inward and forward slightly. This also helped give more slack for the servo and ESC cables going to the receiver.

Masking and painting some of the trim pieces:

SLIDERS

The stock sliders wouldn't work with the Tacoma body, so I worked at designing and printing my own. The main goal is to provide a channel the body can sit in. Here is design attempt #1:

Meh...didn't thrill me too much, so I made some updates and came up with (even this has some errors in it, the spacing is wrong front to back):

I like those a lot more! Now to print in higher detail, and black:

Got the body painted, I think it's too thin in some places as when I shine a light from the inside you can see through, and I didn't have a base coat to put down like a black or white. But, I am pretty happy with how it came out!

I also got a fender set (8072), knowing it was going to be a tad too wide for the stock Sport body (but I'd rather trim them down than have to extend them using the rubber pieces that Traxxas sells). But, with the Tacoma body they needed to be trimmed WAY down, but I think it came out okay:

The only problem I have outstanding are the rear body posts, what comes with the Sport will not work. I'll be looking for alternatives.

Great looking build! You picked a great kit to start with!

We seem to have a similar build style. Excel, zip-ties and 3D printed pieces parts!

Great job on the body! It looks great!

Thanks! It's my first time working on a body, was pretty worried it would look like a hack job when I got done, but so far I am happy, and it's not so perfect that I'll be super upset when the scratches and cracks come :P

You should use 3d printed shock mounts for longer travel

Today the stock TRX-4 Sport body got paint and I went with a black and blue theme, dying what I could of the accessory parts black. The red items, gas cans, jack, and extinguisher wouldn't take the dye, so they stay off the truck
