Thanks

I did the filing on the passenger side of the servo, but I use the flat headed screws that came with the kit to mount the servo. I ordered some servo wire extenders so got that covered. Thanks for that info.
the mamba x esc it just looks bigger then the stock esc just thought
that it needed some other place to be mounted

What motor are you going to be running?

Well the motor?
I got the castle esc / motor combo the guy at the LHS said that would work on the trx4. Looking at the post here I think I got misinformed, The motor is a sensored 14 series 1406 4600kv max rpm 100,000.
I think this is way to fast? I was told that the mamba x esc you can fine tune everything right from your windows pc and setup the throttle and brake curve
So as for a motor? Stay with the stock motor or find a better motor to run in this setup and keep the stock motor for a backup.
I have no clue as what motor to get! I am not looking for Speed
i would like to get something that is good and slow with crawling power.

Oh jeez, that is pretty high. I’m sure you could make it crawl fine though in the programming since it is still sensored. But, the most ideal Castle brushless motor would be the blue Castle Slate motors. They’re made specifically for crawlers.

I just asked about an esc for that optima and I said I had gotten a trx4 kit,
Then yak yak talking he started talking about programming esc's
then the mamba x and he said for the money it was the best deal.
He said the mamba x could be set to make this motor crawl for a trx4

Yeah, the Mamba X IMO is the best bang for your buck. I’ve never had a brushless system, but after a lot of research, I think it’s clear the Mamba X wins the comp. I am about to get a Mamba X 3800kv Slate Combo myself.

This is what I’m currently running and I’m happy with it.

https://holmeshobbies.com/puller-pro...rd-2700kv.html

I’m geared 9/45 and have my throttle curves set to 70% of input = 30% power.

I can go as slow as I want. All I do is crawl and have no interest in trail rides.

The motor your LHS suggested should work but probably won’t be ideal. Like you said you can tune the curve and start up along with really gearing down like 9/45.

That is interesting that you Hobby Shop recommended that for crawling.

If you can exchange it for a Castle Slate combo like SLN mentioned, you’d be better off, like a 2800kv motor. Or even just getting the Mamba X and then a Holmes Puller Pro.

I highly recommend Holmes Hobbies YouTube channel.

https://youtube.com/user/HolmesHobbies

He covers so much regarding motors, esc’s, crawling, tuning, etc. And even more important, the WHY.

Tune your Mamba X pretty much verbatim to his tuning videos. He makes it really easy and goes through it step by step.

I went to Holmes hobbies youtube, this was after I got the mamba x combo
the kid at the LHS He talked like he knew what he was talking about so I went with what he pulled out of the case.
As for Gearing and new at this you are talking about the pinion gear on the motor and the 45 tooth slipper gear?
From the manual the pinion in the kit is 11 tooth

So it I get a CASTLE 1406 SENSORED MOTOR - 2280KV OR
CASTLE 1415 1Y SENSORED MOTOR - 2400KV

My problem on the motor stuff is 540? or 550? 550 is bigger motor right?
but reading some of what Holmes hobbies says 550 is better for crawling along with being a brushed motor but using a brushed 540 motor on a crawler will kind of burn the 540 up faster?

This is what I told What would be the best setup for about 200 bucks for a trx4 and esc and a motor just to try and crawl around rocks and what not
No give it all you got Scotty warp 100

So I will ask Please I am sold on the mamba x esc after playing with the demo software mode, What would be the best motor to just crawl over things

Castle what is the difference between the 1415 and the 1406 then your suggestion the PULLER PRO R 540-L V2 ROCK CRAWLER MOTOR 2700KV
$149.99
I will spend 150 for a motor but will it last a long time over a 550 motor?

I have not one dam clue as to get for my trx4!! I thought I had gotten the best from what was said from the kid at the LHS

OR

CASTLE 1406 SENSORED MOTOR - 2850KV

OR

CASTLE 1406 SENSORED MOTOR - 2280KV

OR

This is just me but I’d choose the Puller Pro either in 2700 or 3500.

I’m sure the castle motors are very good also.

When you order from HH, you can have the battery connector and jst plug installed also for a couple bucks.

Nice having the jst already there if you want to go to direct powered servo in the future.

ETA -

Here’s Holmes discussing the Puller Pro v2

https://youtu.be/_-cXMmPu9mk

And here he is with the Puller Pro -L

https://youtu.be/0kx2QjP5MO4

ETA 2 - I just saw your question on the pinion.

Yes. Pinion goes on the motor that meshes with the spur gear on the trans. While the 11 is good, if you’re just crawling I’d go 9t pinion. They’re inexpensive.

If you’re worried about slow wheel speed, run 3s batteries.

If your rigs a 2 speed, definitely 9t. If you need to go faster like on a trail ride, just put it in second gear.

Just my .02.

Nice to see you have your build on the go Bill.

The 2700kV Puller Pro from Holmes is what I have in my TRX4. Also paired with a Mamba. It is an excellent system. That said, even your 4600 Castle Slate will do well if you gear it down and adjust the the throttle curve to mellow it out a bit. There is no need to necessarily buy a new motor right off the hop. So much of the experience is relative anyway, so starting with what you have and then swapping out the motor later will give you an idea of how the numbers translate through the rig. The experience once the tires hit the ground is your greatest teacher. Swapping out a motor and adjusting your Mamba settings is super easy.

Anyway, looks like you are enjoying the process. While not necessary, strategically adding good quality parts to a build is always enjoyable. In my experience, aesthetics and quality only contribute to the enjoyment of a rig

Thanks Guy's for the help and advice

I do not know if this makes any sense but, I do like to tinker around and tweak things, but I also do not like having to take things apart once I have put things together. I think it is an old age thing? I can remember staying up all night trying to dial in the carbs 350 chevy tri power in a 67 chevy Malibu SS
I wish I still had that car!!

i keep looking for a 9 tooth pinion gear and I see different spacings. I hope I get this right what I need is a 48p 9 tooth pinion! and not a 32p 9tooth pinion???

Just taking my time, it is the Honey do list that is killing it seems to go on for ever, I get two or three things done and it still says I have 18 things to do

Is there a Honey do list divorce Lawyer out there somewhere ?

My bad went to traxxas and looked at the specs page
it is a 32 pitch so I need a 32 pitch 9t pinion

I guess Holmes hobbies do not have pinion gears

Your lhs should have those. Traxxas ones work just fine.

The only thing I have available to me is a traxxas “dealer”. Has some things. I cleaned him out of the 9t pinions.

I had a HR metal spur and Robinson 9t in for a while and that was a loud setup. Lots of gear whine. The Mamba setup is already squawky as it is. I went back to Traxxas spur and pinion and it’s quieted down.

I got a holmes motor and a 9t pinion on the way. I did not want to do the 50 mile plus round trip.

I do have a new question

I got the narrow trx4 fender kit and installed them, then I test fitted the body
there is like a 1/2 inch gap between the the fender wells and the jeep Cherokee body is the ok or should it be a tighter fit?
should I install the stock fender wells then cut to fit?

Meh I’d personally leave it alone. 1/2” gap is still going to block most of it.

Yes, ok, Fine!! it seems I am turning into a rc junkie.
I tried to do a system restore back before a date I found this web site
but my pc wont let me go back that far! Dam window 10

I got the Holmes 2700kv motor and a 9t pinion but I splurged and got a aluminum center trany case

I thought I would try this aluminum trany case! For 28 bucks shipped I thought try it and follow the the treat here about trany clicking and set this trany up right for no problem down the road. I hope I get it right

I got the yeah axle's built but I used the stock axle shafts. Will see how they hold up

Also got a package of servo wire extensions, Still think cut and solder to the length needed to make a better connection, but I will try and just connect the steering servo with the extension and see what it looks like.

How many of you are nit picky too??

No reason to solder the extension to the existing wire, they’re made to be plugged in anyway, so if it didn’t work they wouldn’t sell them.

I’ve tore down and rebuilt my trx4 transmission 10+ times without any clicking, so don’t overthink that lol.

Nice upgrades to start off with, looking forward to seeing it all together

Lol. At least the parts that you want are available.

I got into rc crawling last year this time of year.

There was nothing available at the time regarding items I was interested in. Motors, esc, servos, etc.

This resulted in me snagging parts and spares up as soon as they became available. Motors that I thought I’d be interested in down the line at some point, I grabbed.

So parts being available and shipped is a small inconvenience compared to last year. Lol
