TRX-4 Camel Trophy D110 Project

Almost a year after my first TRX-4 hit the road for the first time, so it was about time for a full maintenance. By that I mean taking everything apart and give it a good clean


I didn't start a build thread for this. It started as a TRX-4 Chassis Kit and TRC D110 Defender hard body. That's how it ended up eventually.















It was a tricky process, but it was fun. The purpose of this thread is to encourage people to ask any questions or maybe give some info on how I did things along the way.


So, after a year of use I took everything apart. Applied a new coat of marine grease in the axles and transmission, lubed the shocks, resoldered the JST cable on the ESC that i somehow managed to take it off. It's been a busy week but definitely worth it. The chassis looks great again.







It was a good chance to finally implement something that I had in my mind for a while. Change the mounting system on the body. Magnets were great for the occasional trailing, but as soon as there was an incline, the body would come off. They simply couldn't cope with the weight.
When I saw the new Bronco mounting system, I knew I had to try that. So here goes







Of course a lot of trimming is required on the fenders to actually fit the hard body. The front ones were easy. I had them before, so used that for a guide. The rear ones were a little bit tricky, because of the interior and the rear bed. I decided to get rid of the whole bed inside the cabin and trimmed a small portion of the fenders.













The mounting clips on the back were easy to install and hide inside the cabin. I'll come up with something to close that gap. Maybe use the cut piece or make a container out of foam.







The front ones were trickier because the bolts are visible. Good thing is that they come out on the exact spot that I was thinking to put some scale details, like a shovel and axe, so I'll probably use them as a mounting base for that.







So, was it worth it? You bet it was. I had my doubts going into this project, but these things hold great. I can lift the whole rig in the air, holding just the body and it won't move a bit. I had to take it out for a test drive and check how it behaves on some inclines.










The clips hold the body on the chassis, in places that the magnets would have failed. Big improvement and definitely a better way to mount a heavy hard body, than magnets.

It will fit. Any body will fit if you get a bit creative with it. This particular one has 334mm wheelbase, so you will need to extend the rear driveshaft and links.


To start with, you need the 324mm wheelbase. If your rig has the 312mm wheelbase you will need the short to long wheelbase kit (part 8057). Then you'll need an addition 10mm that can be achieved by getting parts 8149 and 8150.


For the mounting sytem, go for the 2021 Bronco clipless system (parts 9216 & 8080X)


Depending on how low you want the body to sit on the chassis, you will need to trim some of the interior or a lot.

So yeah, a lot of Dremel work there. However when it is mounted none of this is noticeable. Here's some pictures of the interior fitted. I'll try to get some more.

Sweet that's awesome! Thanks a bunch. I've been crawling for a while but I've only ever done lexan bodies. This defender or the killerbody lc70 are going to be my first hardbody. I got the 324 wheelbase already

I had this on the shelve for quite some time now, so I decided to actually do some work on this and maybe take it out on the weekend for a drive.

Found this foam piece in my parts box.





I'll wrap the piece of cloth, I had on the roof to add a bit of volume there because it looked completely flat. Weights next to nothing which is good.







Fits nice and tight. I'll probably will do some paint job on that jack to make a bit more realistic.







Came out a bit shorter than I expected, but it's better than the flat thing that was there before. Now it looks like there is actually something underneath.

When I installed the clipless system, I got some scale parts to go there and camouflage the bolts on the hood.





I won't be using all of them, just a pair, but I needed the bases for the mounting system. I'll give them a paint job as well. This grey looks like playmobil tools

The jack blends nicely with the rest of the items on the roof, without that all red striking odd.





The shovel and axe got mounted on the clipless system support plastic.









Not totally scale looking, but I'll live with that. Better than 2 nuts coming out of the hood 😂

After fitting those last pieces, I had to take it out for run. It's been a while since I had a full day with this. Not much crawling, but trailing with it is a blast.

About time to close that big hole on the floor, I had to cut for the inner fenders and the mounting system.





I wanted something as lightweight as possible for the job. Found this piece of foam that I cut in 2 pieces and will glue together to make a L shaped structure.







I thought about using some kind of cloth to cover it, but this dish mat will last longer.





I used double sided tape to mount it on the car.





Used E6000 glue to keep the dish mat on the foam and some toothpicks to hold it in place will the glue cured.







Here is the finished construction.





Mounted on the car's floor. Looks better than the hole that was there before and it will keep dust and water out. Most of it anyway.

Thank you durok! It's a bit frustrating not being able to go outside or get together with the rest of the family. It's our Easter this weekend and the weather is really good for outdoors, which only adds to the frustration


But once this goes away, I'll make up for it

That super sized mouse pad is a life saver. I do everything RC related on it and then simply roll it, take it outside and give it a good clean to get rid of any dust, grease or whatever falls from the cars
