Servos for rock racing?
 

Hey everyone what servos are you running for steering? I'm in the process of looking for a servo for my wraith and twin hammers. I do not really care for the best because the best costs a lot and do not want to spend a lot unless thats the only option. Something with pretty good torque and speed but the main thing I want is for it to last a while. A servo that does not get a ton of play after a couple of races would be nice. :lmao:

HiTec is really a good brand, yes it is expensive(relative), but even builders like HH are having teething problems (Turnigy 910, included), if you want to experiment with trying to find the best servo for the price then there are alot of options and even if they are only 20-30 $ each (Solar, etc.). I am sure some will last, but under the grueling conditions of rock racing and the inevitability of it getting hit (impact/shots to the servo/impacts to the arm, etc.), they won't last. Anyway after 3 servo's @ $30ea, your there 7954.

Look at all the servos at the next race, take a count of what is out there, I bet 1-2 Futaba, maybe a HH, but a majority Hitec.

7954 is steel geared. 7955, 7950, 7980, 7990 are all Ti geared.

Also the "new" 8380th....the new one I am trying out....specs;

I think i heard that the motors are BL in the servo and thats why they can perform so well and yet don't need HV. Not sure on that one though....he said she said. But the specs above are from the back of the packaging from the servo container.

Hitec 7950 in IMO, but honestly, no matter what servo you run, you hit it hard enough the wrong way, its gonna break!
Ive gone through 3 $100+ servos in 8 race events, my advice, PROTECT YOUR SERVO the best way possible AND drive better!

I use the solar d772. I am on my 2nd one from running both u4rc series.

Twin hammers is pretty light. I have never blown a servo in mine. My 8lb 2.2 Trophy rig is another story.

I've been trying to figure out how to make a servo saver for a 4 link setup...no luck yet.

I've been running the same Futaba BLS157v in my Wraith for almost 2 years. My truck is light now, but it was 6.5lbs for the first year.

Like everyone else has said, spend the money! Breaking a bunch of $30 servos adds up fast.

Why not just run one of the savers the clod race trucks use?

You think either of those will last with plastic splines? These rigs take a beating on track, not just a couple jumps here and there lol

They have plastic splines but the spring is protecting them. A cartwheeling brushless clod with wide wheels and spacers isn't exactly easy on steering components.

I've been trying to think up a way to put heavy springs inside of a tie rod, so the steering will still work on the rocks, but in heavy hits like cartwheels, etc. the springs will take some of the hit of the servo gears... it would most likely only need 1/4-1/2 in. of travel or so to be effective.

Savox 1230. Steel gears, 500oz of torque. 6V.

Unlike the 7954 & 7955 it doesn't have a weak link "carbonite" gear that will strip and ruin the brass motor output gear. Yes the titanium gear set still uses the carbonite gear making the Ti aspect nothing more then a marketing gimmick. I've owned two and have been disappointed.

If you need something slightly faster give the savox 1231 a try.

I put 14 hours of run time on both of mine almost every weekend.

Take it for what it's worth. Look through my build threads below for information on hitec and savox servos torn apart, waterproofing aspects, stripped gears etc.

I'm not a fanboi, I seek function and durability.

have you tried them in rock racing very different from scaling or bashing. I run 7955 I have a couple little problem but with the warranty I just send it in and they fix with no questions.

I was thinking more along the lines of an aluminum bellcranck of some sort...but coupling it with this sort horn style servo saver would be even better"thumbsup"
