Just curious (not sure if you tried this), but, instead of using the 'Sport' axles, would it be possible (and, if so, how easily or difficult) to use the locking/unlocking axles with the VFD? Also, if it can be done, where would the micro servos get mounted?

I don't see why not. TRA8240 is the mount for the micro servos. I've seen people relocate that and/or install it other chassis. There are also 3D printed parts available that accomplish the same thing with different mounting options. A quick search on Thingiverse should yield some results.

Some more progress has been made on Chassis #2 - the one with TRX-4 Axles. Mt. Goat R/C has been working on a custom rear cage for me, and sent me some sneak peeks. It's looking pretty good to me so far:

Can't wait to see the finished product.

Great looking rear cage!

I like how it sits low around the fuel cell.

Thanks all, for the positive comments. Credit goes to Mt. Goat R/C. I gave him a basic idea of what I wanted, and he just ran with it.

The cage is finished with the addition of the hinge at the back. He's working on a custom front bumper now.

Cage and front bumper are all done.

Now just need to do some final trimming and detailing on the body and figure out what I'm going to do about sliders. The universal sliders that come with the VS4-10 chassis kit are not wide enough for the SR5 HiLux body.

I'm thinking the Origin sliders might work. They seem a little wider. I'd love to score a set of the Clear Aluminum sliders from the Origin Limited kit. they'd be a better match for the stainless steel cagework and bumper, but I think they are too long. I may have to go with the plastic Origin sliders so I can cut them down. Open to other ideas on sliders if any one has them.

Origin sliders are perfect after a little trimming.

These ones are cut down for a SR5 cab, you basically cut them to be equal length on the front and back.

Looks like great terrain for crawling! Did the maiden voyage meet or exceed your expectations!

This thread has some great information, thank you for that. I have my VS4-10 Ultra sitting here and I keep thinking those VP axles are just too nice to go tear up on the rocks. I keep thinking about selling the axles and putting something else under it (like the TRX4 axles), but it appears to be no easy task unless you go with some variant of VP front axle with offset pumpkin. Maybe I should just go ahead and scratch up my Ultra axles while its sitting here so I won't feel bad about running them!

BTW, #2 truck looks great. Still an awesome build without the VFD trans.

Thank you. This was a good learning experience for me, and I ended up with two awesome VS4-10 chassis-based rigs. Even though I punted and went back to the 3 gear trans to make the TRX-4 axles work, I have no regrets. The rig with TRX-4 axles sits relatively low with the extended shock towers and still has all the travel of 90mm shocks. I will need to do some tuning to get it exactly where I want it, but it's definitely performing very well as-is.

I say run it with those F9 Portals. But if you're feeling adventurous, you could continue the experiment with TRX-4 axles. You might not run into the same issues I did with your Ultra because it uses standard-height shock towers and 80mm shocks. Others have figured it out - likely using standard-height shock towers - so apparently, it can be done.

awesome thread, good looking rig also. one question i still have, would the ssd offset axle have worked with a 3 gear trans instead of the vfd?

I really have problems with the length of the panhard link. Can you tell me how long yours is from eye to eye? Your build looks really good, i love it!
