It doesn't appear there parts work with the brake rotors, but otherwise don't seem too bad

I have the Vaterra parts & rotors on my Ascender and it doesn't look like the rotors will work with the HR hardware.

I am wondering if the diff covers they make will improve gear durability.

Someone else wrote about possible housing flex increasing the gears chance of breaking. After swing the design I think the metal would at least offer a little extra support on the spool. If you pull the diff cover, push on one of the wheels the spool jumps right out, now if the plastic diff cover can somehow deflect s bit, that will increase the slop in the mesh every now and then. It was just s thought. I will try them, can't hurt.

Nice to see more vendor options, their diff covers are very nice! I compared their knuckles and c-hubs with the Vaterra aluminum and Vaterra are thicker on steering arms and where pivot (steering) bushings ride, therefore I will buy Vaterras.

Too much wheel weight is not good, I don't like 1.9 wheels over about 90 grams each.

Yes, they hold the bearings in place which hold the gears in place. Also help reduce any flex of the axle housing center section, both help keep gears in proper alignment and mesh.

That was me in the HD pinion/broken pinion thread and iirc saw somebody else said it too. As you said about the spool kinda drops right out, but you don't want it too tight. I used the HR aluminum diff covers and shimmed both diffs too.
