Blacking out chrome

OK, on my 1:1 1984 K5, I had blacked out most of the chrome and wanted to do the same to my Ascender. I'm going to try Super Clean to removed the chrome from the grill and diff covers. I may do the wheels as well. Other than the Super Clean, does anyone suggest another way? Painting over the chrome for me is a no go.

Super clean works really good. Takes a little while though. Did the wheels and the diff covers. Makes it look way better in my opinion

Picked up some last night. Buy one, get one free at Advanced Auto Parts. "thumbsup"

Before I left for work this morning, I put the four kit wheels in Super Clean to soak for the day.

Good to hear it works. Black is always better than chrome.

I'll be doing the diff covers and grill tonight.

Might have to try this. I like the grill as is, but those diff covers are a bit too blingy for me.

Re: Blacking out chrome

It does in fact work but give it time. I put the diff covers and grill in for 12 hours and all the chrome pint was gone. No scrubbing needed. I used Dawn dish liquid to clean them off and let them air dry. Wheels took a bit longer. Seems like the over did it with the spray on them.

I left them as they are for now and will most likely spray the grill and wheels black and the diff covers orange to match my old 1:1 covers.

I used Easy Off oven cleaner. Worked great and only took about 20 mins to do all 4 wheels.

good old fashioned brake fluid does the job too..
just soak the parts for a few hours and the chrome will pop right off..
