| Codyboy's "bulldog bronco" ascender
I wanted to change up my Ascender so thought it would be best to start a new thread. I want to step out of the box a little with the Ascender platform and build a 1.9, class 2 that may reach 60 scale points. I'm not going to do a build list, cause I don't plan far enough ahead to know what all it is gong to have on it. This build may be a little boring to some because I'm going to try and pass forward what little skills I have and hopefully help someone new, or one who is a little shy about trying something new, or (think out of the box). I have a couple extra Ascender frames so I'm starting with a new one so I can use my old format to check measurements and fit as I go along. The body will be a Proline Wraith Bronco body with open cockpit. It will have 3/16 SS tube cage and bumpers with a winch, a wench and what other goodies I can build for it. Any questions or suggestions are welcome as we go along. Remember there are no DUMB question, if I don't have the answer I'm sure someone else on here will!!! Remember, I'm 67 and do this for the love of the hobby and with the idea that I may just be helping someone else!!!! So let the CARNAGE begin I will post some picks tonight. OK, made some pretty good progress today. As promised here are a few photos. Most important tool for a builder is this cutting/layout matt. If you look close you can see I transferred the frame rails and rock slider mounts to the lay out mat. Also in orange is the out line of the body transposed over the frame rails. This helps figure sizes for tubing/rod and keep everything centered. Next is my home brew tubing/rod bender. I like this type of bender because I can highlight bend angles and duplicate bends. In the above photo you can see the lines I used to duplicate these three side pillar bends. Here is the ss rod I'm using to attach the cage to the frame rails. I started by building a box with a center pillar and then cut it down the center. Next I counter sank some 3/16 holes to insert the cage mounts. Ready to braze. Attached and ready for next step. Body on and double checking for fit. The rest of todays progress. Thanks for looking!! Last edited by CODYBOY; 04-27-2016 at 09:25 PM. |

Is it going to be a pain installing drive line and electronics without the tube frame being removable?

Thanks for your input, but it shouldn't be much different than changing those in a regular bodied Ascender. The body will be removable and the cage will be open enough to get my big claws inside it. If you can see anything else that might be a problem let me know. Ernie, |

Dang you're fast at this stuff, love the open top with fastback cage look! Thanks for showing us all how it's done too, lots of nice setup info. Looking forward to the next set of sliders, I know you're always busy! |

Nice work thank you for showing your tools and tips. I'm new to the rc world but not mechanics by any stretch. Learning the tricks and tips before starting a project is always nice. Thank you! Love the car scissor jack ratchet handle for your tubing bender, repurposing at its finest! Ben |

| Re: Codyboy's "bulldog bronco" ascender Thanks Poprivet, Seems that I like that low thuggish look. That is what I'm trying to achieve with build, low COG and keeping the weight down. Quote:

I think that you have probably seen in some of my other builds that I love to repurpose. Goodwill and a local recycle yard are two of my favorite stops when we go to Eugene. Last edited by CODYBOY; 06-19-2016 at 10:30 AM. | ||

Headed south for a couple days to watch a couple of my granddaughters softball games. This is what I got done this morning. This is why I love using Safetysilv 56 for brazing, the joints are so clean!!! I added some tabs to the top as this build will have a clear top that will have my bulldog painted on it. also added some side bracing below the doors. Thanks for looking. Clever building one slider and cutting in half down the middle to ensure they are the same. Where they attach to the frame rails you drilled in, but not quite all the way through so they fit into the rails?

Thanks Nate, I saw the slider trick on an old Kentworth build from I think 2012. And yes, I drilled the rear frame halves just enough so the rod bottomed out just before it went through the holes. This way I can still adjust the frame length If I need to. And when I put together the slider/ cage braces I spaced the bars so they lined up with the holes already in the frame rails. My Daddy always taught me to "Work Smarter, Not Harder". Just an other one of my rules of life! Ernie, |

Had a good trip to see Grand kids. Was able to make some good progress today, But first thought I would show my work station for fabricating my builds. Torch I use, it is not a high priced set up. Cutting stations, On to building, framed up for the removed doors. Next I started mounts for the rear shocks. I cut a slot in a couple pieces of tubing so I could insert the tabs. One of the tools I use for holding parts while brazing, Shock mounts in place, I'm going to use the stock shock mounts in the front, A couple body on pics, Test fitting the wraith interior, I'm going to work on the front and rear bumper tomorrow. Thanks for looking! Ernie, Last edited by CODYBOY; 09-05-2016 at 09:23 AM. |

Looks scary to me! I would love to know how to do metal work like you do, but I am the kind of guy who burns himself making toast. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Thanks for the input Sammy. It really isn't as hard as it looks. You could always start with a small project and work your way up to a chassis! If you were interested, I 'm sure I could talk you through the process. Ernie, |

Ok time for a update, sorry if all of the photos are boring for some of you but hope they are helping others? The rear bumper is a piece of square tubing. Very little weight, great exit angle and meets class 2 rules. Both the front and rear bumpers are removable, having said that I needed to make a pretty hefty mount for the front bumper. Good thing is it is some weight down low. The front bumper was a little more complex to build. Has light guards, stinger and a home brew fairlead. I should have a decent entry angle. Thanks for looking. Last edited by CODYBOY; 05-04-2016 at 10:59 PM. |

Nice, those wheels and tires will go good with it. Love how you slotted the tubing and then soldered in the shock mounting tab, it's the details like this that make it cleaner looking and stronger. Great approach angle too.
