Default GCM Ascender Kit - Performance???

Hi all,

I am thinking of ordering the GCM kit for my Ascender. How does it affect performance? My only concern is that the truck works so well out of the box, I don't want to mess with a good thing. What characteristics change? Would you do it again? Is the only reason to do this to run an interior?

I am a big fan of the GCM kit (and all things GCM in general). Besides making room for an interior, it redistributes the weight of the components for more forward bias. You can easily pack all of your electronics (except the battery) over the front axle which helps with climbing and keeping the electronics from getting sprayed with dirt and water. There is a point where you end up with too much weight on the front end and performance suffers but I haven't found it.

My Ascender hasn't been stock for quite a long time so my comparison to the performance of the stock layout may be a bit fuzzy. I would say that my truck with the GCM kit performs every bit as well as the stock Blazer that it was at the start. This is probably more impressive because it is now significantly lowered and shortened while running much smaller tires compared to the stock version.

I have looked at this kit in the past, but have not pulled the trigger. I see that they still do not have the intermediate shaft in stock . No complaints on my rig, but when I get home from camping I am working on a project and I might try this kit.

I used a steel shaft for a Tamiya semi picked up on ebay that I cut down.

Cut it at the groove near the end of the female side and it is perfect for the Bronco wheelbase and it may not have to be cut for the longer wheelbases.

SVT, thank you for the link. I am keeping my Ascender at the full frame length.

N00b and I both ran Ascenders with the GCM bits to much success. Big fan here. Pretty bullet-proof when set up properly. Having that forward weight bias really does wonders.

EDIT: 100% get the outdrives for the axles if you only get one thing.

I am actually running SSD D60's under my Ascender, or I would absolutely get the outdrives if I still ran the Ascender axles. Right now they're on my 1.9 Wraith.

Does anyone know if the transfer case outdrives are located in the same spot as the Ascender trans originally is? I am using the SSD scale steel driveshafts for the SCX10 that I had to cut down about 8mm to be able to fit them on this build. If the transfer case outdrives are in the same spot, these will obviously work. If they're narrower, I'd need to know and how much so I can make sure these shafts still work!

They are defiantly narrower. I'll try and get you some dimensions tomorrow.

I got about 6hrs runtime on mine. Works great.
