New build thread would be great. As for Blazer or Bronco? Both ;-)

Mail came! box is still sealed!!! Now I'm even more excited about my "good deal"

After a quick look everything looks to be in order, front end seems really loose but I'm planning on going through the whole thing in and out so hopefully that will snug everything up. Just need to solder a deans plug on the esc and I'll be ready to roll. It will be a shame to scratch up the pretty body, I like it even more than I thought, really digging the short WB and the bronco body.

As for direction...I've got some ideas, I would like to go more scale with this I think, especially now that I've seen it in person. I like the idea of leaf springs, the gcm kits look nice, along with interior etc. I will probably swap stock radio and receiver to a flysky, I'm planning on hacking my radio that I currently have and if I go scale having the extra channels would be nice. I also have some goodies in the mail thanks to codyboy!!! I can already tell I'm going to have to start deciding which truck to tinker with, quite a problem huh? Ohh well there are tons of free upgrades to be done first!

Welcome keith! First things first, check out natedog ascender thread.

I can send you some screenshots tonight when I get home on how to buy a star, your right it's not very intuitive.

There's a ton of free upgrades you can do to any of these trucks that doesn't require buying anything. Ebay is also a good source for things, there are a couple ascenders on there right now that I was watching before I bought this one.

Cheers!!

This thread was also a good guide as well as a couple threads from CODYBOY. Use the search field to help yourself find things on specific topics. Don't be afraid to ask quetions either!! What's the saying ...the only dumb question is the one not asked...

Got some goodies in the mail!! Pulled apart the front end, checked shims, bother were on the wrong side, swapped them over, seems a little tight but I think it will all wear in. Greased everything up, put everything back together and everything is much tighter than it was out of the box. There is still a little play in the wheel hub, might throw a shim behind the hex nut to snug it up a bit. I also think they had the drag link backwards...so swapped to the correct side, everything seems good now on the front end. I've tried to back off all the shocks but still don't have much droop. Not sure if it's the lighter body compared with the blazer? Might need softer springs...

Did a little work last night, lowered all the body posts by a hole, trimmed the fender flares and cut 5mm off the front bumper mount to tuck the bumper in a bit. 5mm puts the bumper right against the body. Personally I think the rtr body mount holes are a little off. I feel like it should sit just a bit more forward. I also adjusted the shocks to allow some droop. Will move the 5mm bump stop inside the shocks to limit them at some point.

Before the body lower bumper tuck...

Love my Ascender Bronco! One word of advise if I may. The rear bumper that's molded into the body will catch when dropping off a ledge and actually tear the rear of the body. Mine did this the very first time I took it out. I cut it off and threw together a simple bumper to protect the rear of the body in such instances. Just thought I'd warn you before you rip the tailgate off "thumbsup"

Yeah I'm actually going to do the same with some 1/8 aluminum stock I have laying around...I just need to get it cut down. I need to dig around and find an old blade for my tablesaw...that should do it...be a lot easier that a hacksaw!

Finally got the new radio in (gt3c) and was able to tool around the yard and play around on a tiny rock pile last night. The short wheel base really changes the feel even in the yard. Unfortunately it's snowing now so I don't expect I'll really get to test it out until next spring (on anything other than snow and ice). I've got a few ideas for mods/improvments though over the winter months, and depending on what Santa brings me will probably determine a direction for this rig.

Re: EBay bronco

Had a chance to really get out with the bronco today, I know this won't be new info for many of you but I thought I would go over some of the performance differences I noticed compared with the blazer, maybe it will help someone decide between them! I ran in the same places ive been runnning the bazer. The differences between the 2 are the esc's, bronco is the RTR esc, and my blazer has a hobbywing 1060, blazer also has CI closed cell foams and the Bronco has stock foams. It was cold and wet today foams probably wouldn't cause a noticeable difference. It definitely doesn't feel like the blazer does, it seems almost twitchy with the short wheel base due to the shorter turning radius, in some situations its a big benifit since it lets you manuver around obsticles easier which can be a problem with the big blazer body. The short WB also allows for better cresting in some situations and I noticed fewer hang-ups under the skid plate when crawling over smaller boulders. The Bronco has a VERY steep departure angle which is nice compared with the Blazer, I cut 5mm off the bumper brackets in the front of the bronco so it also has a better approach angle. The short WB is noticable on steep climbs and decents, seems to be more likely to flip over backwards or when descending the rear would either slide around to one side or the other or come right over the top ass over tea kedel. Lowering the suspension some more may help this a little...but short WB vehicles will always have their rear ends trying to get out front more than a longer WB I think. Uneven side hills seem a little tougher, with a longer WB you can often get a tire to a stable location before flipping, with a short WB you can't "reach" as far if that makes sense. Conclusion...they are both fun, and surprisingly different...if your trying to decide between the two...just do what I did and buy both :D -pics to follow-

***note- lost a shock spring retainer today...didn't wire them to my springs like I did on the Blazer. Save yourself the hassle and do that right away if your new to the hobbie like I am!

Good job with observations of the difference between the two Chris! One of the things that I might add is that the K10s wheel base is right between these two so you can kind of read between the lines on how it may fit your needs."thumbsup"
