Then we drove the coastline again back to Sydney and through up to a place called Townsville. It was a 6 month escapade with my oldest buddies that I have known since we were 5 apples tall.

It was one of my lifes greater life experiences. When we were in high school we developed a shared dream of surfing Australia. We were skateboarders back then so had a lot of hangout time to develop a good plan for after graduation which we executed in pretty good style. We likely Surfed 80 percent of the beaches we passed by including infamous spots like Cactus Beach and Wilson's Promontory as well as more famous ones like Bells and Margaret River. I likelylucky to have survived to speak of it...lol

Also spent 4 nights on a beautiful old sail ship on the outer Barrier Reef diving day and night. That was up off of the Townsville coast.

I was 19 at the time and it was quite a long time ago. Freaking awesome trip though. Even got myself chased by a pack of Kangaroos once....like the stupid Canadian I am...

Great looking comp and pictures as usual, thanks! I really like stock gearing with that motor and 3S too.

Dang, that sounds like an awesome trip! Old skateboarder here, but never surfed, yes probably all lucky to have survived our younger shenanigans!

My mate has been staying with me, gave him his wheels, tyres and foams for Xmas and today we crawled around the granite at Boat Harbour. Here are some pics.

Took a couple of mates on a trail drive, almost 4 hours to go 4 Klms!
Hot, damn hot, temp is nudging 40c ( 104F )
My Ascender, one SCX10.2 and a Bomber, great fun, Cicada’s chirping, summer time in Australia.

The bush is very dry, thick layer of tinder dry sticks and leaves everywhere!

I helped my mate get his SCX10.2 sorted out, lowered the shocks, fitted internal limiters, added a bit of lead to his new wheels and tyres, CI DW foams working great, thing goes everywhere my Ascender goes now. We attempted this walk the day before but he stripped the plastic servo horn in the first minute, got an alloy servo horn on there now and it’s all good!

Time for a snack, some fruit, water and a cool down halfway up the big climb out.

Oh man! We tried to make a new track up a steep part on the left of the trail, the Ascender took a tumble, cartwheeled down and across the trail and kept going down through the bush, picking up speed and bouncing off trees, biggest tumble I have seen yet!

That’s me climbing down to retrieve it.

Only damage was 2 busted rod ends, 1 front lower and 1 rear lower, stoved front metal bumper in and had a stick spear through the lexan and split the line open where the bottom of the window meets the door.
Had spare rod ends, quick repair done on the trail and kept going!

Hi Yeti.Stealth,

I’m new ‘round here, and spent the evening casually scrolling through your thread.

I wanted to say thanks for sharing your experiences. It seems the Ascender has served you very well! That’s very encouraging for me, as I recently acquired a new K10 Ascender.

Happy Crawling

Follow Hugh Jackmans advice in this clip if you wanna try some, all Aussies are fed vegemite on toast from a very young age, it’s usually the first real food you eat as a baby!
Jar on order, will follow up report later!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed my thread!

The Ascenders are very tough! You will be happy with the K10, and in time you will do the usual upgrades that are common to any RTR, better steering servo with alloy servo horn, wheels and tyres, maybe a better radio with more adjustability, a Hobbywing 1080 ESC that can give you smooooth drag brake etc etc.....

What you won't be doing much of, is replacing busted parts!

Ahhh, Vegimite! This will probably end badly haha 😃

My mate is loving the new wheels and tyres, Nate. And I gotta say I am impressed with them too, Proline G8 XL swampers and CI DW foams, what a combo! He was the only one able to drive a steep dirt climb, the Bomber and my K10 no Bueno!

They are a great all rounder tyre and I'm thinking a must have at some point.

Man, missed some of your recent posts - saw the carnage shots...(!)

... and, it's STILL Ascending, descending, and just plain cruisin' the flats!

They need to do a Vaterra ad with your rig, like Toyota used to do with those Hilux owners that had put millions of miles in their trucks.

Perhaps lol, but I'm going to give it a chance. Too many peeps won't try anything new and only eat whatever they grew up on, besides it's healthy.

Rather chilly here lately and I'm missing that weather in a misguided desire to be warm, come summer here I'll be sweating it and wishing for cooler weather too.

Have been hitting the trails a lot lately, Ascender has been clicking and grinding along with worn out pins and driveshaft ends, rear driveshaft pin failed last time out at the end of the trail, time for some TLC.

Old bearings crunchy, drive pin gone, drive shaft end slots worn out.

This is what a 4 year old ring gear looks like, you can see the wear on the teeth. This is the original ring gear from when it was a first release K5 Blazer, the pinion gear is a HD one that I fitted as soon as they were available too, so it pretty old as well.

HD driveshaft as old as the HD pinion gear, worn out now! It never broke or stripped, still going strong but time to bin it!

Rebuilt with new bearings, driveshaft, driveshaft ends and Home made drive pins from spring steel, re used old ring gear and pinion and trusty Codyboy axle housing!

Overhauled the front driveshafts with the best spare 2nd hand driveshafts ends I had, new pinion bearings, and new home made pins.

Should be good to go for upcoming trail drives.
