Good job on the water proofing. Cool to hear that you and Rhett are going to a comp. I'm going to put together a box for you guys in a week or so, get some new parts on my guy Rhett's truck and maybe something for dad!

Still working on my braising skills. This will be the rear bumper, at least for a while.

Looking good Cary, a couple things to help you a little. The 2 center joints look like you have a good flow. The left one looks like it could be a cold joint, you shouldn't have what looks like a solder ball. Are you using Safety Silv 56? Hope you know I'm not being critical, trying to help.

I tried some of that at Lunsford's shop the other day and it was a huge difference using that and the 56, (the 56 has more silver content, so IMO it flows a lot better. I use the 1/16" wire, and I buy it in a one oz. coil. I know some guys use the 45 to fabricate with. But if that 15 is working for you I would keep playing with it.

OK need some feedback. Here is a very rough mock-up of my hinge idea. The bumper will be hard mounted to the frame. The little hinges will be braised to the bumper and to the plate under the cargo floor pan. This plate also supports the rear of the roll cage. If you look close you can see the plate.

The body and interior would pivot off of the rear bumper. I could use more than 2 if needed. You will barely see the hinges and after a fuel can and tire are added maybe not noticable?

Looks and sounds pretty good to me, probably add a third hinge in the middle for strength especially since they are brass which is softer than steel.

I think so, you're doing a great scale job, who cares if someone else doesn't like it as long as you do. As you said and I agree barely noticeable once they are soldered and painted. Scale fuel can on the back and good to go! If it breaks, make it stronger next time. I often over agonize my modifications and have trashed handmade parts that were almost done and started over. Now I try to build, test, if it breaks then make it stronger next time.

I agree with Nate, you're the one that needs to like it and no one else! I think it's great that you are trying something different, and stepping out of the box a little. For me that is what makes this hobby fun. I have spent more than a few hours sitting in front of my work bench looking at a pile of parts and trying to figure out how it should all go together. And it's ok to take a step forward and two back. Why is that fun???? Because when you're done and it all comes together you can sit at your work bench not looking at a pile of parts, but a finished product with a big smile on your face!!!!
Ernie
Keep up the good work young man! If you can build the wood splitter that you built, a toy truck mod should be a piece of cake!!!

I don't like my cage, so I spent some time trying to braise aluminum. It took a few tries but I finally got a strong joint. Now I just need to practice until I get consistently strong joints.

This is what I am using.

I also practiced on some flat stuff. I couldn't break it with my bare hands.

I have bent the cage out of 1/4 inch aluminium rod. I don't have a picture of that yet. It's coming.

Those look like nice welds Cary, aluminum is difficult to weld, good job!

OK finished braising the cage. Joints seem strong. I'll post some pics after I polish the joints a bit. I still need more practice but I am pleased so far. It looks a ton better than the first one. I might have to build a tuber next. Maybe a class 2 truggy. I'm getting into this a bit

Maybe the fields will still be to wet tonight and I can finish the cage. I can't remember when I was actually hoping for a cancellation. You might be right!
