Hmm, I know a guy that makes axles similar to those! nice work.

Make sure you pin the brass to the housings with 3mm screws, or they will eventually start to spin. Especially the fronts.

Wrapping up the power wagon. Still some detail work but I'm happy to be able to drive it now.

Repainting my body with more durable paint after Proline BTF destroyed the last job . A lot more weathering and rusting than the last paint job.

Putting in a hobbywing brushless 17.5 motor and V3.1 esc. Was going to put them in an associated sc6.1 but got bored and wanted something different. Can’t wait to try it out. Might go up a tooth on the pinion. Also got some new pro line km3’s and ssd links but they won’t be here until Monday.

Those are great looking wheels. I just ordered those exact same rims on Monday and expect them to be here Wed. I went with the RC4WD 1.9 Goodyear MT/R

Got tired of toasting Savox 0231 servos in the girl's truck. Last one lasted less than six hours trailing.

Same problem with all three...truck would stop dead during operation as if the low volt battery protection kicked in. Letting it sit for just three or four minutes, it would operate fine again for a few minutes, then go dead again.

I'll say up front I've been running it with a CC Sidewinder 3 ESC without a BEC, but I shouldn't have needed one. The first 0231 servo lasted three years of hard trailing around the country. I have a lot of rigs and rotate them based on how I feel that morning, but even though she has the Ascender and an SCX10 Power Wagon she always runs the Ascender.

I shotgunned the electronics today, replacing the Sidewinder with a Hobbywing 1080 and installing a DS3218 servo. Was a good time to remove and flush the still original Axial motor, check the spur, clean everything up and do a bumper-to-bumper health checkup.

Operation is much smoother with the Hobbywing, as expected. Nice fringe benefit to get rid of the annoying buzz that was ever present in the Savoxes.

Bye-bye, Savox...bye-bye.

I wonder if the current crop of 0231's are of lesser quality. I had the exact same problem with mine as you described. It would "freeze" and then work after a few minutes. However, mine also had a hard time turning left and couldn't steer worth a crap sitting still. And this was with a 1080, for reference. I put the DS3218 in mine and it has been great so far. It doesn't even get warm, where the Savox would get pretty hot after mild use.

good call buddy. i am running the same exact ESC and servo on my rig now. remember my post about ripping apart the steering links on my truck? yeah, that was with the might of a 3218 on a mere 6.4 volts from the internal 1080 bec. i cant fathom what these things could do if they could take more voltage.

Interesting to be sure. I realized after reading your post that I forgot to mention the servos were getting awfully hot to the touch, so I experienced that as well.

See "Bye-bye Savox"

Yeah, I'm hoping the girl's not just going to tear things up now...she's still on original stock steering parts but somehow I get the feeling that may change soon... I also realized I had her DX4C throttle travel set to 100%, so I bumped it to 150% where mine is...may have been a poor choice.

I have been having bad luck with my savox servos also. I put one in my f100 when I first got it and it lasted 2 runs. I have another one in my daughters rig and it just seems to be lacking power and ever since I put that servo in it has cut a solid 45minutes off the run time.

If I could've remembered when exactly, or where, I bought this last one I may have considered looking into some kind of warranty return. I usually disregard warranties on this kind of stuff as by the time you jump through all their flaming hoops it makes $35 kind of irrelevant.

I'll settle for talking with my wallet and using a better made product moving forward.

I recall reading in another thread that Savox tends to build their servos to run "hot" (high current?) to meet their specs. It would explain the excess heat and possible run-time issues.

I think that's probably it. I think that's why they buzz all the time. I believe the encoder wheel is partitioned poorly so it is constantly working or the armature constantly is stuck between commutator tabs? I'm just guessing but I think it's something like that. I am not sure but I used to have nothing but good luck with them and now I don't feel like the quality is there anymore.

I may have thought that if in the first two years of constant experience with them I ever had the heat issue. The first one that failed in particular had never exhibited excessive heat until it started locking up the rig so I don't think it's inherent to the component.
