Default Ascender Builds

Just about done with my Aschammer. So while waiting for some parts I started on my Ascender. Not sure exactly the route I'm going yet but first I'm going to start some performance upgrades.

Got the interior installed and removed the window tint

An Aschammer is a Ascender chassis with twin hammer drive train. I built one before the Ascender was released with a scx10 chassis a few years ago. I have a build thread for it in the Twin Hammers section.

So I changed my shock mount location on the axle but now the shocks bind. I guess I will have to get a better quality shock before I make this MOD.

Shocks shouldn’t bind mounted like that, only outboard the rear, front limits flex too much. The floating spring separater sometimes rubs on shock threads, sand the inside of it smooth and bevel the edges will fix this.

Yes that's why I changed it. The bind is inside the shock.

Made a kangaroo killer. Looks kinda neat.

Changed my links. I lengthened the wb by about 1/4. Trying to get like 11.75. Just a hair short. Going to use different link ends and I think that will be just right.

I really don't care for 3 link panhard setup. Besides a little bump stear which you get with this panhard setup anyway I may try 4 link and get rid of the pan hard just to see how it works. If it's awful I will just have to change the linkage so they are closer to the same length. I had a 4 link with CMS on an axial and it worked just fine. Honestly better as the pan hard pushes the suspension to the side slightly which causes binding when you lift the side the pan hard is connected to.

I also have a twin hammers sway bar set with 3 different weights of bar. Going to see if I can make it work.

Whats moving around, the axle? I thought that was to be expected from a 3 link w/a track bar (panhard bar?)

When your suspension binds, how far are your shocks pushed left, or right while it’s bound up. When I put 5” shocks on ascender #1, I noticed I had to lengthen my pan hard bar, but I over did it, and started to notice a binding on the right side. After messing around a bit, I removed some of the spacers in my panhard bar, and now it doesn’t seem to bind up, or not as badly. My shocks almost completely compress without binding, almost, with in the last cm it looks like it’s binding.

I was just looking at your rear shocks, and the outboard set up, and I got to wondering if the shocks would still bind up if you switched to Traxxas hollow balls, they’d give the bottom eye of your shocks more range of movement since they have wider flanges on either side, unlike the ascender hollow balls.

I was thinking about trying different balls also. I got to playing around with it and I think that's the issue. I modified the front by adding a spacer behind the shock on the top and that helped in the front. Due to the panhard it pushes the front over more than the other so the one side is OK but the other side causes the shock to bind really bad about half way through. Seems better. Not fixed but an improvement

Um, try unbolting the track bar/panhard bar on one side, then centre the front axle under you ascender, then compress the suspension to about ride height on a level surface, check again for a centred axle, then take a measurement of the track bar/panhard bar, you might still need to adjust it...slightly.

My set up, I used savage x hollow balls with no flanges and that narrow nut that comes with the proline powerstroke hardware kit, then the link end, all still inside the link mount/bracket.

My helpers decided that the stock servo isn't good enough so we replaced it.

I tried it 4 link but the bump stear is intolerable. While I had it apart I noticed that the panhard is short. Lengthened it a little and that helped tremendously. I think reworking the stearing will help also.

I put spacers between the shock and the shock tower and it made a big difference in the front suspension. I can bottom the front shocks now with out binding.

Trimmed out the window. Looks good and gives me a place to blow out the interior with the air compressor to keep it clean.
