Default Id like a bit more top end speed

3s or bump up 2 teeth on pinion with 2s?

Not looking to break stuff, just want some more ponies on the top end.

3S or 27T motor if you are currently running a RTR 35T.

Gearing up is basically never the preferred option.

Thanks, yes I am running stock electronics. Will look at some 3s options

If you go 3s then you can use a slightly smaller pinion, but will gain in wheel speed. Just keep an eye on motor temps even with a brushed motor.

I run everything on 3s power. In a couple of rigs I have a plus-1 and plus-2 pinions without issue. Everything has 35T motors. The extra wheelspeed is great.

The problem with 3s without upgrading your esc is you get really jerky control - it's really touchy. For about $100 you can get a hi-volt graphene 3s 3600mah pack from AMain, and a HW1080 speed controller. Now you really have some options and they drive SO much better with the tune-able ESC.

Really a fantastic setup for Ascenders - I have three of them setup this way.

BTW, I've been considering trying a slightly faster motor too, something a little smoother and nicer like a HH pro-something or crawl-master, in 27T or equal. Just to see how it does.

I hesitate to mess with a good setup, but there's never anything wrong with a little more speed if you can maintain or even improve crawl. I would go back to stock gearing with a faster motor.

I have a HH Trailmaster Sport, a Yeah-Racing Hackmoto V2 with replaceable brushes, and the stock Dynamite motor that comes with a RTR. Recently got a Axial Blazer RTR and they have the motor Axial sources - it's a cheap sealed-can motor too. All of them are 35T, and I can't tell any difference in any of them - they all perform the same, run the same, and make the same sound. Well, the Hackmotor is REALLY quiet, but that may just be gear setup, and the ESC. With the HW1080 you can set the pulse frequency up really high and they go virtually silent.

A 550-can motor won't fit in an Ascender unless you move the battery tray, and I happen to really like the floating-on-axle setup.
