| Softer springs
So I’ve had my Ascender out a few times now and while it’s a great performer, I feel the stock springs are way too stiff. It seems very bouncy at anything more than a crawl. Are there some softer springs I can buy, or should I just replace the shocks entirely? I’d rather keep it as cheap as possible for now. Any advice appreciated.

I tried replacing the shocks at one point but forgot that the Ascender uses longer shocks, I forget the exact length but not 90mm. this makes it harder to find replacements I found that the Vaterra upgrade shocks work pretty good. https://www.rpphobby.com/product_p/vtr334017.htm Vaterra had different spring rates available but they look to be discontinued unfortunately. Maybe look around on ebay or other places. I see there are still the upper springs available. You might be able to find other springs that at least fit the Vaterra shocks, I think the SCX10.2 springs are pretty close as I've used the Ascender springs on them. The bouncy-ness might also come from being low on shock oil. Last edited by HumboldtEF; 03-09-2020 at 05:21 PM. |

Thanks for the info I’ll look into that. Not low on oil, just replaced with new 30wt with little change. Maybe easier to just replace the whole shock.

I’d worry that the torque twist would worsen with softer springs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm running modified traxxas big bores up front with losi mini-t springs and the upgrade vaterra shocks in the rear with green losi springs (regular, not mini-t). Stock length is 108mm but a lot of guys like to run the stocks internally limited by ~5-8mm so running 100mm's should fit the bill. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk |

Good info so far, the stock RTR/kit springs are the medium rate upper and lower. Vaterra offered sets of soft/medium/firm in packs of uppers and separate lowers, might still be in stock at RPP, AMain or Tower Hobbies, I've got a couple packs that I've tuned with. Axial springs, Losi, should fit the Vaterra shocks. Bounciness probably from small shock piston holes, softer springs/oil will allow more torque twist unless doing the Rich Trujillo dual rate spring mod, rear swaybar, upper link relocation, shock outboarding. I like my stock and aluminum Vaterra shocks internally limited...9mm on the original Va'Blazer and 5mm on my K10 now with 1946 Dodge Power Wagon body. |
