Default Codyboy's spare parts Ascender build.

Well, it has been a while, probably to long!!!
This is part of the reason,

I really enjoyed playing with the Camaro during the summer and the Malibu is a new build for this summer.

Ok that is it for excuses:
I was going through my shop the other day and came across my ascender parts box. And I thought "Holly crap I probably have enough parts to build one more Ascender"!! (It will be ascender build # 6) If you followed any of them you know I liked to step out of the box..

Just a few builds of my crazyness.

Codyboy's 46 Powerwagon Flatbed.

Codyboy's 79 Ford (Rent to Own) Ascender

Codyboy's "bulldog bronco" ascender

CODYBOYS ASCENDER "Modifications"

Codyboy Designs "How'd you do that"?

Codyboy Design: 1972 Chevrolet K10 Pickup Ascender

I have no Idea where this one will go, but I will try to build this out of all parts I already have in the shop.
I think the Ascender is an icon and deserves "A LITTLE LOVE" from us!!
For the price it was the best scale crawler 5 years ago. It really is a shame that production was stop on it. This little truck made me a lot of money when I was building axles and sliders for it.

Now for some meat and potatoes of the build.

And this is a chassis a good friend in Texas gifted me a few years ago and (since Ascender chassis is one thing I don't have) I figured the flag would be perfect for this old girl.

A couple bodies I could use.

As I'm building I will try and show some of the old fixes we did to make the truck a little better. If you don't want to wait to see them in this build go back and look in the links I posted earlier.

All for now, next will be rebuilding and modifying some pretty blue shocks.

Glad to see yet another CODYBOY creation!

I've still been driving the heck outta my K10, it's my go-to truck - finally broke the stock plastic front shock mount and that will force me into finally installing the upgrades I have laying around...

Soze, don't you dare get rid of that ascender!!! I think if you did the ascender gods would put a curse on you.
Hope this build will give you guys a reason to dust them off again. If anyone wants to throw some input into this thread, feel free.

Next up is Rich's torque twist shock mod.
Yes, this one.
Shock Setup Tip for reducing Torque Twist

I took my Blue upgrade shocks apart for a rebuild. I like using Traxxas shock rebuild kits for most all of my shocks.

These are the old shock spring adjusters. I screwed all of them on to one of the plastic shock bodies and turned them down on my lathe.

The shocks had the red o-rings in them, just two rings and no seating washer in between them. These are what I put back in them.

Going back together with Rich's mod.

I cut two grooves in each shock piston for better oil movement and put them together with 22.5 shock oil as a starting point.

I put 10mm limiters inside the shocks and 5mm outside. So the shocks are now 100mm instead of 110.

All done, and ready to go into the build. That's all for tonight.
Ernie

I pulled parts out of my Ascender parts box and sorted them so I can see what I have.

I have some old ascender weighted rears that I can use there. Also some proto type fronts that I'm going to use for the front.

I have several different trannys I could use but I think I will use a motor forward set I have from G speed. Also putting Treal 11% OD gears in the front with a 15% OD transfer case. So 26% OD will be just about right. Starting to get a little crazy???

Glad to see you back in this section Ernie! I’ll be watching for sure. I’m still puttering from time to time. I had an idea to build an IFS ascender so I got the element IFS kit and built that. But I’m going to build it up as an 80’s pre runner so only 2wd and with the Rc4wd blazer hard body. I thought I had a spare ascender chassis but I don’t, I already used it. I ended up putting it on the back burner for now as I have many projects around the house and with the kids. But I’ll build it up at some point. I want to make a long trailing arm rear suspension and probably an ssd based 10ii rear end for looks and gear ratio.

Anyway, keep us posted on the progress! Love your builds.

Default Codyboy's spare parts Ascender build.

Glad to see you getting into a build Ernie!!! I don't have a ascender, but always liked how all you ascender guys stick together. Can't wait to see what you come up with! Your builds never disappoint!!! Subbed!

Hey Ben, it has been a while, nice to chat with you again. I didn't think I had chassis rails either until I went through some of my other parts boxes and found some. If you can use them for your build let me know. When I'm done with this build I'll be selling off all my Ascender spare parts.
I've been going through spare parts and my stable and selling a lot. I'll be turning 73 in a couple months and Marcia would be lost going through this stuff if something happened with me.

Here is a couple photos in my setup jig. Going to set it up at 12.5"

More of a update later!

The Ascender Bender is back!

This should be fun. Curious to see where the gspeed trans takes the old Vaterra platform. I have had thoughts of either selling off my Ascenders or mofifying one to the next level of performance.

I'm lovin' them chassis rails!

Nice idea for a setup jig! Simple, yet effective! I've been thinking about making one, but haven't taken the time to come up with a plan to make one.

"Ascender Bender" You're to much smog!!! Remember this truck is evolving daily so no Gspeed tranny, But I think you will like what I came up with. Do not sell your ascender Mr. !!!!

Jig is easy, go for it! Glad you got the IFS for your build.

Update time.

This is a proto type of axle we where going to make a couple years ago. We didn't follow through with it because it didn't look scale, but this is my build so I'm putting it on this truck. Offset pumpkin and Treal over drive ascender gears.

Figuring out link sizes to get to 12.5" Going to move the skid forward just a little past center.

I kick around the idea of a motor forward setup with a 15% overdrive T-case, but change my mind on that one.

So even with 10 mm limiters in the shocks they were to tall for my liking.
Over to the lathe with the four bodies for a 10mm hair cut and a change from 2 springs to 1.

Ok smog here is the new Tranny and skid. The white skid was drilled for axial pattern and the Enduro tranny fit it perfectly. Have had the tranny in my parts drawer for a while so built it with 12% under drive to the rear. Along with Treal gears in the front this should add up to a little over 23% overdrive on the truck. All with ascender gears front and rear, we'll see how the torque twist is when it is on the rocks.

Starting to figure out electronics and fitment for all the links in the front.

Motor will be a Holmes outrunner, not sure how the enduro gear ratio will play nice with the ascender axles????

Ok guys all for now, any questions or input welcome.
Ernie

Project looks good Ernie.

I think you just solidified my need for a mini lathe…

Time for a little update. I had a vanquish chassis battery tray and sliders mocked up but didn't like all the weight and fitment on chassis. So came up with this. Trying to keep in mind that this is a spare parts build I'm repurposing parts from my parts tube.

A cut down battery tray and cross mount from I don't know what?

I was able to get the battery fairly low.

I kept the Vanquish sliders but the esc won't fit on the slider because the body is narrower than the esc fitment. So mounting this at the rear shock tower for the esc and a servo winch.

I looked around at my used bodies and decided to hack this Creep body to fit over everything.

All for now, have any suggestions feel free to give input. thanks for looking

Ernie
