Smile Pham's Vaterra Twin Hammers - SAY NO TO STOCK ELECTRONICS

On Friday I picked up my first Vaterra product from work! Like everyone else I have pictures of it stock. I got to play with it for a few minutes at work in stock form and found it to just be crap. The electonics stock are horrible, the motor howls like crazy, the esc sucks with a crappy delay going forward to reverse and vise versa, the steering servo is slow and has as much slop as a 2 dollar whore, and the radio is the only thing that's halfway ok but it's entry level and sucks in my eyes.

So the pictures start.

Comparison against a couple of my other RC's Axial scx-10 Jeep Wrangler & RC4WD Trail Finder 2
Also some wheels/tires ideas

Here it is naked with all of the crappy electronics stock... Looks horrible I know!

So much better!!! Got rid of all the crappy stock electronics.

Damn the electronics are that bad??

Good thing I have enough stuff laying around to gut mine and re-equip it in a similar fashion (if it will ever get here)

Clean re-wire job dude, looks good

Saw a pic on another thread under the drivers compartment which will need a little bit of modification.

I'm surprised you even ran it with stock electronics Mike! It's been a while for me but I'll run it for a while until something goes. I have a few servos lying around but short a MT4 rec so will have to use my 3r until I can score another one

In my eyes the electronics are that horrible, other than the radio it makes the Axial current rtr electronics (servo & ESC) a huge upgrade. It's weird because everything else seem to be built very well yet Horizon just scraped the floor with their electronics. Tazer??? Just crap...

haha there never such thing as overkill lol, my original plans were to use Badger setup with the ROC 412 with a Tekin RS which I have but it's for my JK build so I have a couple extra RX8 and so that's what happened... I plan on using a Pro4 motor on this rig but I need to order the correct rotor.

There could be room for a servo winch. If that's what you're asking or stating.

I never ran my rig with stock electronics, I ran the store demo vehicle. LoL Trust me you'll hate it after you use it for a few minutes... everyone else is having trouble with their shifting servo burning up which is stupid because that one of the big point on this vehicle. Please get rid of that 3R Spektrum garbage lol, I know country has cheap RX for the MT4 in stock.

If you're going to throw away the stock electronics you could through them my way! I have a Traxxas Rad2 that needs an upgrade. Has to be better than some of the crap I have from the 80's.

Have you ran it yet with this shifting servo setup? I installed a standard size servo for the shifter and my shifting linking would bind up if the shifting rod was not perfectly straight with the throw of the linkage on the tranny.

What is it about the 10.5 that you don't like? Do you think a different rotor (14mm HT) would make a difference?

Just got mine and I didnt even turn it on before i ripped the elecs out.
I have put a Tekin 17.5 and a Hobbywing SCTpro on 3S . Savox servo, Pinion gone down to a 23, there is enough room to go maybe a 20. I want this to be more of a crawler than a go fast. I ran out of time to put the cage back on but it crawls pretty good . Next to lock the front diff.

I threw the elctronics in another vehicle, I always recycle. But other than the ok radio, it all sucks..

There's nothing wrong with the motor at all, it's just a pretty low turn which will drop run times compared to a 13.5 or 17.5, the 10.5 does seem pretty fast on high gear. I have a bunch of motors laying around 4.5, 5.5, 10.5, 17.5, pro4 4000kv, etc etc.... I figured to get the rig running right now I would use the 10.5 for now BUT I my original intent is to run the pro4 motor and since it is a 5mm shaft I need to get the rotor with an 1/18" shaft, which is currently on order. Also what's the whole point of putting a huge RX-8 for it and not put a big motor in it...

Same here I didn't even plug the battery in before I tore the whole thing down. Since I got to use my work Twin Hammers stock when I went to pick it up. Why put such a cheap ESC with a nice motor? I plan on putting 500k oil in the diff like Badger has on his before I fully lock it up.

I have ran it in my house for fun last night since I just finshed it up. It shifts very very smoothly with no binding at all. I found neutral on the transmission and setup my radio so that I have 3 positions (Neutral, First, and then Second). It's cool to be able to rev up a brushless motor and then neutral drop it like a little high school boy at a red light lol. I could post a video with the body off going through the gears if you would like.

Does this controller have a three position switch?

I'm not sure if you're asking me about the stock or the one I'm using... The stock does have a 3 position swtich but I don't suggest trying to get it to work the same way because you can't set 3rd channel trim. You can only set EPA which is just dumb.

I'm using an Airtronics MT-4 and it allows you to have up to 6 position swtich. As of just right now I am using a 5 position swtich setup like this: Neutral, 1st, 2nd, Neutral, 2nd that order, SO I can neutral drop it in both gears.

We will see how long this transmission last

Yeah, 2 pos, 3 pos, or linear modes
