Hi guys... you will see me poking around asking questions soon. Got my son a TH RTR for the holidays and it's so awesome I had to buy the Kit version for myself!

Will the S500 Spektrum servo work for shifting?

Was looking at the SCT Castle 3800 combo... was looking to make it 10-20% faster than the stock RTR. But I would like some low speed control and waterproofing. Maybe brushed is the best way to go??

Welcome to the club. I love brushless in mine.

Shifting doesn't need a lot of power, just make sure your end points are set so the servo doesn't keep trying to push.

I built my kit a week ago and paired it with the SCT 3800 combo. Works great!!!! Using a 28 pinion I believe. I bought a hitec servo for shifting so I can't comment on that spektrum.

Are you using it for any crawling? Or just high speed runs? How is low speed control?

I'm running 26t I think for crawling and trailing. It does well for both. I am actually very impressed at how well the thing actually crawls. It's impressive truck, very under rated in my opinion.

It is very under rated. Axial is a very popular brand and tends to put everything else that is similar in their shadow.

I own a lot of axial.... Yeti Jr., yeti score, Yeti xl, and an scx10 but last week when I put my hammers together I couldn't help but be impressed with the quality of the transmission and build quality. There were a couple things like the steering rack that I wasn't fond of but for the most part I love it.

Agree.... most Horizon Hobby products are usually of high quality.

Trailing, tooling around. Between work, kids , wife and now snow it hasn't gotten too much use yet but I look forward to it. I didnt buy it for speed runs, don't know who would. It is fairly quick in high gear for what it is. I'd say 22mph ish and can pull wheelies handily with high grip.

Want to pre-order a new Castle system.. so I go with the standard shaft or the larger 5MM shaft? Seems that pinions are available with either option I select.

5mm more durable? Never had an issue with a motor shaft before. 5mm becoming the new standard??

Still undecided between the 3800 vs 4600. Now with the Sensored Mamba X release.. I will still have great low speed control with whatever motor I pick. I can always go with the 4600 and just cap off the top end... hmmm...... decisions. Any advise on this one?

3800 kv. You don't need it to go any faster than that.

Depends on what battery you want to run. If it's 2S, I'd go 4600kv.... indeed i have a HH 4500kv puller pro in mine right now. Gear it for whatever speed you want, and you'll be getting the best from the motor. 3s, and you'll probably need the 3800kv to stay within the motor max revs.

What pinion gear would you recommend for the 4600 with the stock 78t spur?

I feel attitudes like that are harmful to the hobby. I know you do a lot of good for the community but seriously, why does every vehicle have to be a land missile? I run my twin hammers with a 3800kv sidewinder sct setup with 28 pinion and it is plenty of power and speed for the chassis. Anymore would just go to waste on a stock build in my opinion.

I have plenty other machines for a speed fix.

How fast would you guesstimate your hammers is? I would say mine has got to be doing around 25 mph.

I have made a final decision....

I'm going Brushed with a 15T motor. Exact same setup as my sons TH V2 RTR. That way when I "race" against my 6yo, things will be fair and still very fun.

And I get to save $150 over buying a brushless setup for now.

My son has been crawling it.... driving it thru the snow and jumping. What a blast!

I really hope HH keeps this model for awhile and more people would catch onto it.

I run a 28T if I remember correctly, I have not really looked at it in some time, pinions do not wear much. I do know I change between 74T and 88T spur, depending on where I am running. I do run a sensored brushless 550 can motor as well, so take that into account.

Harmful? It is just my opinion and experience, (I had a 3800 at one time). Is that not what forums are for to share.
Yes it does need to be a land missile,that is how I have fun in this hobby. If your not pushing it your standing still.
That is your opinion and I do not think you are hurting the hobby with it.

Me to but it is nice to also have one that does it all,,,,almost. :mrgreen:

Right at or just under 30 on GPS, depending on battery.
