Default Higher Voltage Winch Controller - Part no. HVW

UPDATE: Feb 17, 2014
Because so many of these HV winch controllers are failing in the field, I am temporarily suspending sales of this item.

** See post # 27 for more, but the main bit of info is:
The controller no longer requires to be powered from the same BEC as the receiver. It is okay to use a separate BEC or up to a 2S Lipo battery to power the winch. **

The Winch Controller circuitry has been reworked so it will run at a voltage higher than 6 volts. The standard 6 volt version is still available, but if you are looking for more power and speed from your winch, this will help.

Some of you like to run your steering servos at 7 volts or so. Ever wish you could run your winch at that voltage too? No problem with this controller!

Want even more power from your winch / winch servo? You could try 3S Lipo, if you think your winch will handle it (but I don't recommended it)!

There are a few more parts in this controller compared to the last version, but it should still fit inside a servo case.

The controller on the left is the 6 volt version. The new HV version is on the right.

Here it is mounted inside my test winch servo. Haven't got the back cover screwed on yet.

The HV Winch controller is $35 plus shipping. Part no. HVW
Need a JST connector? Order Part No. HVWJST

Thanks for looking.

** I need to include this here so that hopefully more of you will read it:

I think I better post a little about how these controllers have worked in the field.
Of course, people want more performance from their winch, so they run the voltage up higher than six volts. This is what I designed this controller to do. The parts I used will easily handle at least twelve volts.

What I am finding is that if the controller is run from the same power supply as the receiver, things work great. Running your receiver at a higher than normal voltage is fine, depending on its specs. For example my Spektrum SR3000 will take 9.6 volts
see: SR300 3-Channel DSM Sport Surface Receiver (SPMSR300): Spektrum - The Leader in Spread Spectrum Technology

When the controller and receiver are powered from different supplies, bad things sometimes happen. I know this is the way things are often hooked up, but for some reason that I haven't been able to fully trouble shoot, this is a recipe to burn out the winch controller.
Put another way: The receiver and winch controller need to be operated from the same BEC, weather that be the ESC's built in BEC or an external BEC.

This good news!

Could you check to see if the case will go back on ?

You da man, Al! Thanks so much for doing this for us. So how much voltage do you feel this controller is safe for? I'm just curious 'cause I only plan on using 9v.

The output device has a maximum voltage of 30 volts! Don't try and go that high though... bad things will probably happen. Should be safe to 4S Lipo, but again, bad things might happen. The little winch motor would probably cook pretty fast and the other issue is that as the voltage goes up, so does the current so starts to get hairy!

Sounds good. I hope my little servo motor will survive at 9v, but I guess only time will tell!

You won't actually try 30 V I hope!

You can order them from me by sending me a PM. I'll send you a PM with payment info etc.

I will water proof it the same way as the 6V version. The circuit is covered with heat shrink and then I squirt silicone in the openings. The one you see above, I hadn't put the silicone on it yet.

30v No .... not that crazy.
But if I had a bunch of spare motors I might ... just for the hell of it.

Money sent for 2 of these.

BTW, and idea how many amps they can handle?

Thanks for the order

They are rated a little over 6 amps.

Yes, that is correct. I could also build them in the two position channel version if needed.

Installed HV controller in Towerpro 945. No more "drifting"

These controller are perfect for breathing new life into those old servos you have laying around.

Thanks for the little review and posting the video of the winch controller in use on your servo winch!

Really fine product. I just hooked mine up to a Bulldog winch running 3s at 7v and no chattering or drifting! I will get to put it to the test over the next couple of weekends and post up how it does
