Default gear mesh

How did you guys determine the proper gear mesh when installing you motor? Since the spur gear is inside the trans, its kind of hard to physically check the backlash. I just installed the motor with a tight mesh, and slightly rotated the motor away from the spur.

When I run it, it sounds fine going forward, but sounds different when running in reverse. There's no additional resistance or anything, just noticeably louder. Higher pitch sound even. Its definitely coming from the trans, not the diffs.

Anyone else had this problem?

When I put a new motor in mine, I used the stock pinion and it was very noisy.. Tried different different mesh's along with mounting the pinion higher and lower on the shaft, and couldn't get rid of it.. I picked up an aftermarket pinion and all is well..

That's what I figured. I've probably got a burr on the 'coast' side of the pinion. I'll take it out and inspect it. Thanks.

If you remove the tranny from the car and keep 1 driveshaft attached, it's very easy to set everything up in the normal way through the access cover. Helps if you use a small flashlight.

Run the motor alone before you go tearing the trans apart. I thought I had an issue when I first built mine but it was the motor.

That's what I just did. Pulled the inspection cover and rotated the motor away from the spur. Ran the motor by itself and its 'clicking' in reverse. I got a sound clip I'll post up when it uploads.

Alright here's the clip:

The video goes forward/reverse/forward/reverse.

In the vid it sounds like its clicking in both directions, but in real life its WAY more noticeable in reverse.
