I've just started messing with youtube, and my videos look horrible. I've done home video editing for years, and I can put out a DVD that'll blow you away - but my youtube stuff is terrible. youtube.com/rctoyguy - what method do you guys use to get clean, sharp videos on youtube? I mean format, codec, etc. I even took one of my videos and posted it on my personal site as flash, and it looks great - the same source video looks terrible on youtube. I shoot on Mini-DV, capture via firewire, edit with Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Sorry if this not appropriate for this board. |

I'm doing mine at 1.5mbps to 2.5mbps 640x480 .wmv now, and I'm happy with the way they look. The key is the "watch in high quality" - I'm pleased with the way that looks. I'm just not sure what triggers the "high quality" version. http://www.youtube.com/rctoyguy |

You can trigger the "high resolution" yourself as long as the uploaded video is a "high resolution" one. WMV is not a high resolution option... must use MPG instead if you want to have a "real" high resolution. When posting a link to the video, you need to add the &fmt=18 option in the end of the link. Check the differences of using/not using the &fmt=18 option: Not using: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjDe8fZxD4w Using: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjDe8fZxD4w&fmt=18 The differences are best seen in full screen mode. Some times, the video dimensions triggers the "high resolution" option even if the video is a WMV file. Videos with dimentions arround 800x600 if they are enconded with "high resolution" settings, i.e., high bitrates may trigger the "high resolution" option in youtube player. My 5 cent of contribution. |
