| Snatch Block testing...
My buddy built a snatch block for his scaler and told me to test it out for him cause his winch isn't setup yet. Soooo.... I pulled my Honcho out and pulled it straight up my bedroom door dead weight with tires scrubbing and well, I'll let the video show results. Please ignore my crappy comentary and shaky video skills, free handed and did it in a hurry. Please leave coments or feedback. Last edited by LIKES2CRAWL; 01-15-2011 at 02:50 PM. |

I like it. I would hate to be in a situation where I would need it, but its very cool.

That's pretty darn wicked! Especially considering the rating on that winch. Nice work.

I wonder how much weight this little winch could move if I had 2 snatch blocks and about 6ft more cable.

Ya, I kind of had that part figured out from full scale 4x4ing back in the day. Works great!

Sweet demonstration. I'm still trying to understand how that works it turns of halfing the pull effort. I saw an episode, i believe it was dirty jobs, where they removed a military hummer out of a mud pit using many of those snatch box devices. There was a lot of calculating being done and many ropes. needless to say they got that sucker out. i got to figure it out. |

The Process •Using a snatch block greatly increases the pulling power of a winch. When a winch drum is fully spooled with cable, it has less power than if it is spooled all the way out due to less line being on the drum, which changes the effective pull ratio. Therefore, the snatch block is attached to whatever the vehicle is winching to, and the winch line goes through the block on the pulley and back to the vehicle. In this manner, more of the pulling power is available for the extraction because of more line being out off of the winch drum.

Heck, I wish my 1:1 winch could do that... lol. Amazing!

Pulleys add mechanical advantage at the cost of moving half as fast for every pulley added. Use pulleys climbing all the time to haul gear, and in some situations, people up a cliff. It's not so much about less line on the drum increasing torque (it does apply though) as much as basically making one part turn twice to move another once. Basically like gear reduction but with rope, pulleys and friction knots in place of a brake. Google "Z line haul system" for a good explanation. Z line (or 3:1 rescue system) is essentially just like using 2 snatch blocks for hauling/pulling a load. If ya need more advantage add another pulley. Theres even systems like the "Yosemite self equalizing haul system" that uses 12-15 pulleys working together to haul an injured climber and 4 rescuers up with the litter on the same line. I've pulled 4 men (1 badly injured in a rescue litter) and gear up 123' of rock with 1 other person pulling. It took almost 3 hours since every 12 feet we pulled hauled the litter up about 6 inches lol. Haul 12 feet, readjust brakes, haul 12 more, readjust brakes (prusik knots) Tedious to say the least lol. No way we could've done that without mechanical advantage. With enough pulleys and rope a child could tug a semi. Last edited by solomon7; 01-30-2011 at 04:45 AM. |
