Default Interest in a comp in Roanoke?

I know there are a few of you on here from the Roanoke area, and I know there are more that aren't that far away. I've just gotten into crawling (raced on-road for many many years) and I guess the racer in me just won't die. So, I've been talking to our local shop about a competition. I think I can get some sponsorship and/or prizes. I own a body painting business, so I'm going to donate whatever I can as well.

It would be in the Summer at the earliest so that we can get everything organized. I just wanted to post to see what kind of interest there was before I put too much work into organizing it. If you are interested, please let me know.

Depending when it is, I would be willing to drive out that way.

I would definately be interested...I know of at least 4 others that would be too, off the top of my head.

If we keep working at it...we might could even have an indoor comp at some point. The course needs to grow some frist...

There is the possibility that I may build an indoor course at my shop (about a mile from Crossroads). That's not a definite yet, but it's a very good possibility.

Of course, there's always "Little Moab" too, but I'm not sure how well that will lend itself to a competition. I have a couple other places in mind that I know will work. One I know I can get permission for since my cousin owns the land. One other I'm not so sure about. I haven't actually tried crawling on either of them yet, but I hope to in the coming weeks.

Naturally pics will follow when I do...

As it stands right now, we get together on Friday nights at Crossroads. People are contributing sections to the course...but it is just getting started. Folks are running 1/18 scale cars on the track primarily, but the crawling crowd is starting to make a presence. We will be there tonight...and I am bringing a new section called "hell hill".

Lil Moab could have several challenging course laid out on it. Plus it is a public park. We could get a special use permit and rope off the section where the comp would be.

I'm going to try to make it by there tonight. I work tonight, but I may be able to get away for a little bit. I have a body that I painted to drop off to Eddel. I may run into you up there.

I'm sure you know this already, but one of the big keys is getting Eddel involved. Whatever he is involved in he will help get going. I know he's sort of out of RC a little these days, but I talk to him about crawling every time I go in there and I think he's getting interested...

Hello,
I recently have gotten into the r/c end of rock crawling myself. I would be interested in an actual rock crawling course instead of the one big rock I have in my front yard. There's only so many times you can climb over the same thing. I built my own "STICK" chasis with clod axles, 55T Integy motors, 8T pinions, 40 series Axial bead lock wheels with Big Joes, Novak crawler ESC, Hitec 5955 servo's and am running a TQ3 radio. Nothing fancy but I was trying to keep cost down.

Welcome Mudinyai. There are getting to be a lot more people in VA these days, and a few very near to you. Our VA club VARCOR has several GTG's and Comps so just keep an eye out on this forum for when they are posted.

Also check out our website - http://www.varcoffroaders.com/forum/, there are locations listed there as well. I'm sure there are a couple local guys near you that can give some places closer to you, they may even already be here somewhere in a thread. Searching for whatever you are looking for is always the best first choice when trying to find the answer to a question.

Sounds like you got a nice crawler there, you'll have to try to make it out to an event some time.

You missed all the fun tonight...

We had 5 crawlers there going. Friday night is usually the GTG time at Crossroads. The new course is pretty sweet!

Any pictures of the course? I'd like to see how it is set up. Is it an adequately challenging course, better for comp rigs, or is it more suited for scale?

I'm interested in Lil Moab I see you guys talking about. I want to find a good location somewhere in western VA for comp events, and GTG's. We need a place out there to pull in the western folks. Plus you guys wouldn't have to travel every time.

Let me know what you can about any good spots you may know of out that way that are capable of hosting an event. Appreciate it.

R1,
what time do you guys meet up at crossroads? Is that course more suited for Super's or 2.2's? My rig is a super, I might have a good excuse to buy me an Axial if it's more of a 2.2 course.

I will have to get some pics this week. It is pretty much setup for 2.2 comp style rigs. It is a series of wood platforms with rip-rap style rocks on most of it. It is challenging for sure. There are some other ladders and a few artificial obstacles as well. We are continuing to develop and grow it.

Lil' Moab is a public park with some really sweet natural rock features. It works well for both scalers and hard core comp rigs. It would be easy to set up a 3 course comp there that got progessively harder. We have made some videos there that you can get an idea of the layout.

It is adjacent to two baseball fields. The only time it is an issue is when little league ball is being played. Parking becomes difficult and kids tend to swarm the rocks.

This past Sunday, we had 7 2.2s show up and had the whole place to ourselves.

Fridays after 5...it is more of a 2.2 course. You would probably get bored with a super.

Seems like a good time to invest in a 2.2 then. Imo the 2.2's seem more challenging. I built my Super because that is what I had heard most about at the time.
