Local VA RC'ers assistance please

Going to buy an Axial SCx10 Jeep Rubicon RC but dont know what battery/charger to buy to get started out the box. I know I want Li Po but they all seem to have different connectors so I don't know what'll work and what won't.

Here is my planned electronics setup.

Engine: TorqueMaster Pro or Expert 540 27T or 35T

ESC: Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster BR-XL WaterProof ESC

Servo: Savox's (0231mg & 1210sg) but dont know what to look for with regards to the specs

Both servos should be fine from what I can tell. I'm not real familiar with Savox. And the Holmes products are pretty great from what I understand.
The key with batteries and chargers are the balancer connections. Just make sure the charger has the right type too. I bought a nice charger from Maxamps and those guys are helpful. I ordered something I didn't need and they called to tell me so I didn't waste my money. Chris the battery man has good info in the electronics section. In fact all the "sticky" threads are a good read. It'll guide you to what battery ratings to go for.
You may need a BEC too. In fact I'd strongly suggest it.

Those motors will be perfect to start you off, I'd recommend the 35T. Has good torque and speed on 3s. The ESC is bulletproof, and has a 5A internal BEC so you don't really need an external BEC unless you plan on adding a super high powered servo or winch, etc. I run Savox 1230 servos, they are awesome, for $75 you get 500oz of torque at 6V. You can't hardly beat that.

For batteries, go to Hobbyking and get some of the nano-tech batteries. They are cheap and great to get started on to figure out what size you want to run and stuff. Get some 3 to 4000mah. That ESC can handle up to 6s lipo, but I would recommend 3s to start (11.1V). Pick yourself up a handful of deans plugs and solder them on. Forget the plugs that come on the batteries, besides it is best to run what everyone else in the area runs so that you can easily borrow batteries and whatnot.

We have a good group of guys in the area that go out a lot to Richmond and Chesapeake scaling, you should come out with us, we will get you all set up.

Never soldered before. Was hoping for a more plug/play an go. Currently looking at the turnigy batterys and charger at hobby king in the 5000mah 2s variety

Soldering is hard the first time you do it, but it's not that bad to learn. You're going to need to do it for the ESC to motor and to solder any lead onto the ESC to connect to a battery. If you are going to be in this hobby you really should learn, but you are close enough that we can find someone to do it for you the first time. Where are you in Hampton? We have a guy in our group in Williamsburg who is very good at soldering who could help/teach you maybe? I will send him over to this thread.

Come out with RAMINATION and I to Belle this weekend, you'll be able to see 4 different very function oriented setups IN ACTION and make up your own mind and hopefully save a lot of money in the long run. We've both wasted a ton of money in the past on things we ended up outgrowing real quick. Until you see everything in person, it's hard to make a decision. We have a brushed and a brushless truck each, all on different tire sizes, heights, foams, cells, bodies, BECs, steering, ESCs and so on. We'll thoroughly explain everything to you in detail

Don't sweat the soldering, bring me the plugs and silver solder and I'll knock em out on the spot.

I'd focus on which hard body you want to run, tires & wheel combo, and motor/ESC. Don't mind helping you get everything working right as long as you bring beer

You'll want a 30W minimum, but I'd recommend splurging for a 60W. It makes soldering easier, and you wont have to buy it later. They are relatively cheap, at least compared to what you are spending on the RC for upgrades.

Looks like durtrax batteries come with dean connectors already.

Why wouldnt a 2s be enought? I dont plan on doing any hardcore rockcrawling. Beach, snow, what ever is in the yard

Sounds to me like you want 3s minimum!

Voltage = wheelspeed. With a brushed motor, 35t, most find that 3s is just enough wheelspeed. 2s just doesn't give enough wheelspeed, which is what you will want in the sand, snow, dirt and mud. Plus, when you finally do come out with us you are going to be disappointed with your 35t 2s speed compared with Miko's 35t on 3s and my 55t on 4s.

I can see your stressing over the connectors. Don't worry about that so much. You are going to need to solder on that ESC anyways (it comes with bare wires), so just do the batteries at the same time. Like Miko said, bring over a pack of beer and he will do it for you.

mah usually dictates battery size, having a ton of mah sounds great but having a big battery that takes up alot of space and usually hurts your center of gravity is a pain in the ass..
