south central wi 2014 crawling schedule

There has been some discussion on pre-selecting or scheduling crawling dates for the summer and maybe beyond... This would help people plan ahead and maybe increase turn out. If there is interest in this and people commit it may even be possible to post the schedule elsewhere like Hobby shops, other forums, etc…

The location for each date is still an area for debate because we seem to have a limited number of "known good" crawling locations. It would be nice to mix it up a bit so people coming from different parts of the state don’t always have to drive to Devils Lake for example…

I think im going to try to keep this simple. I believe every 2 weeks is a reasonable time table to try to schedule an outing (unless you're my wife). I will start with this post and add to it as we decide what we want to do so that all dates and places are in the first post. ( i think i can do that).

Feel free to chime in and discuss what where and when."thumbsup"

Here we go!

* Sunday, June 22nd. Devils lake. East bluff trail. North shore. 10 am

* July 4-5-6. Big gtg at Governor Dodge state park. See thread

* July 20. Baxter's hollow. 8 am

*Sunday august 10 Sauk prairie dam. 7:30 am. That's right on the Wisconsin , at the dam!

I think some of us local guys can get together and check out some of the unknown locations I think we might be able to make a short day out of rock springs I know there was a few spots you were talking about once everything is back to normal and I'm getting a paycheck again i can go to some of the farther places

Re: south central wi 2014 crawling schedule

While in a perfect world, all of us who have met and those we have not yet met, would get together all over the state and then some. It is my intention with this thread, to list things within 1- 1 1/2 hrs of madison. Give or take. Hence the south central part.

I would love to go to chute pond, whitefish dunes, ( bunch of other places i cant remember off the top of my head), but its not feasable for me to think about going that far very often, and i know the people that frequent those areas cant come this far just the same. And i know im not the only one.

I'm not setting any rules or standards, and i will make it up north someday, but i started this thread to help the people in our neck of the woods find each other and if anyone else wants to show up from some far away land, that would be great! Nothing saying a bunch of us here couldnt plan a road trip to go somewhere else either. But for now we should keep it simple, and somewhat southerly.

Id like to try going to hemlock draw and or baxters hollow someday. Still have to get to ferry bluff to see if there is anything there. There was a park near cross plains I should go check out someday as well. Been a long time since ive been there.

Later....

Ive been to both places hiking. I was talking about taking people there sometime. Both are rocky stream beds. Good for a quiet morning outing and worth taking a few trucks out just to see what can be done. I wouldn't call people in from too far away and tell them its an awesome place to crawl, yet. They are not like devils lake. Been spoiled there!

Also wouldn't want to go there too soon. We've had way too much rain

Natural bridge state park is not to far from hemlock draw

Also mirror lake might be a nice trail ride

Natural bridge was a bust. I gave up on pine hollow. One other i looked for i cant remember was a bust as well.

I was thinking about mirror lake actually but have not gotten that far away from home yet. I dont know much about it but there is a gorge within called fern dell that looks pretty cool on the web. Only accessible by water though i think.

Re: south central wi 2014 crawling schedule

So a few of us talked on Sunday and we made a tentative plan to go out to hemlock draw On July 12 or 13. If we have too much rain the next couple weeks we would probably want to change this up some. This would be considered a trail run with rocks, trees, small dirt climbs, possibly a hill climb. Definitely some exploring.

There is water! Your shoes will get wet. If the weather cooperates you should be able to do most of the water crossings by just getting your tires wet below the axles. Unless youre real adventurous of course. There will be times you want to pick up your truck to cross. If this makes anyone nervous, speak up. We will figure out something else.

I have only hiked this place and have not been here this year yet. I just think its a nice place to be out and about.

There is not even a parking lot for where we are going. Its on a dead end gravel road outside of Leland. Definitely need bug dope!

Unless someone wants to come from far away and show up later, I suggest 8:30-9 am. We can meet at my place if you want or someplace in sauk. Just ask. If you want to show up yourself, you need good directions. There's a couple ways in if I'm not mistaken And a good chance you may not meet up with the group if we don't start together. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts
