X-Crawler breakdown pics Well I got a few XTM X-Crawlers in & wanted to see what they were all about. The box isn't that impressive, but it's what's inside that counts! And it was packaged well. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya168.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya143.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya144.jpg The body is 15 3/4" tall & 7" wide. I has overspay film a nice sticker sheet, but no window masks. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya164.jpg Instruction manual & extra hardware. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya165.jpg The chassis is pretty basic. Nice aluminum links & shocks. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya145.jpg Dual shelfs for battery & electronics. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya149.jpg Countersunk hardware on skid. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya148.jpg Maxx sized aluminum beadlocks. They could use a lil more backspacing IMO. Tires come mounted, that's a plus.... I guess! http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya150.jpg Tires seem to be soft, and the tread is different. When I was messing with them on the counter they make that squealing sound like RC4WD tires do. So................... gonna have to actually get em out on the rocks to see how they do. The foams are pretty soft but may need tuning. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya151.jpg Here's the important part. AXLES!!! http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya147.jpg Full lock. If CVD's become available they should improve steering. 15" wide from outside of tires. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya167.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya166.jpg Axles are pretty stout. The tubes are bolted to the center housing so clocking them shouldn't be an issue. Width 10 3/4" from end of stub to stub. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya155.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya160.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya157.jpg Basic servo mount. I don't like how the steering link have so much thread exposed! http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya154.jpg Two piece knuckes & nice beefy aluminum hex. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya153.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya156.jpg When I tried to take the axle housing apart I couldn't! The drive shaft seems to be one piece. I guess they pressed the dogbone pins on after assembly. Which doesn't make sense to me, but it's one less thing to strip! I just expected the axles to be splined. Thery are drilled and pinned & the main gear is slotted to accept it. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya163.jpg Gears are pretty stout. Looks like big berg gears. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya159.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya161.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m.../tamiya162.jpg All of the hardware is 2.5mm or 3mm & is loctited. Axles are nice and smooth, bearings throughout. Everything is assembled you just have to connect the links to the axles w/the included hardware & install your electronics of course. I think XTM did an excellent job on thier first attempt. There are a few things that I would change, but it's a nice truck overall. Very stout and should be a tough rig! "thumbsup" |
Nice write up and photos Coles!! I guess they are not thinking there will be any axle breakage. Looks pretty good. |
looks great from all the pics i saw. it really makes me want to go get one. talk about a BIG RIG. so what happens if you strip one of those gears? can you send the whole axle back to factory to have them replace it? are the gears delrin? great review sir! |

I'm not sure how that's gonna work. They'll prolly have replacement gears available. Shouldn't be a problem gettin em on, as long as it's not the main one. And the gears are steel. |
Would you say they have more or less clearence than clod axles? |
What size hexs or did you say? Are the links 1/4" 5/16"? I really wish this was a shafty. Looks like the lower links could easily be moved to the inside of the chassis. Are the rims two pieces? Looks like the inner rim has six screws in it. Just for looks? What size stub shafts? Man, do I ask a lot of questions, sheesh. |
How the hell did RC4WD manage to screw the Raptors up and yet XTM got them to work? So what's the gear ratio? Quote:
Same here , MOA's suck . |
Are the screws in the beadlock rings not countersunk or is it just the pics? Not crazy about the axle similarity or the lower shock mounts. Id like to see something beefier than stub axles on a super. Steel gears are cool. Looks like a stamped chassis? Verdicts still out, need some time to see how it does. |
Just picked mine up today hopefully a week or two it will be climbing some rocks. This crawler looks very nice very nice finished product cant wait.....kasper |

A little feedback- a customer broke an axle shaft within the first 5 minutes of running his X-crawler. Hopefully a fluke, but I'm interested to hear more reviews since we have 2 more of them in the store. ($399 ea) Ryan |
