I've been working on this crawler for a week trying to find parts to complete it. I got sucked in for 199.99 at the Hobby People sale. I had no idea this truck would cost so much to finish, but its done and now I can see what it will do. I went with the Rooster crawler/55 combos, a 5000mah 2S Lipo and am running the Spektrum DX3R radio. I made my own y harnesses and added aluminum Savage shocks. The first thing I noticed when I tried to climb a small cardboard box, is the shock mounts always hung up on everything. That shouldnt be a problem now. In the future, I'll probably get my wife an Axial RTC because she really digs this one....only if she knew what I had into it ![]() Well here it is, I'll be taking it camping this weekend to see what it does out in the wilderness. ![]() ![]() |

Looking good! One question, does the shock mount rub the motor or wheel during turns and/or climbs?

I'm still working out some of the kinks, I have rotated the lower links and the mounts do not touch the motor although they come very close. With my current setting of 150% EPA, I think they will rub on the tire a little, I didnt notice much last night but I also didnt get full articulation in my livingroom either. Before I moved the shock mounts down, I was coming within 1/16" of the lower links at 150% full travel. Now that the lower links are about 1/2" from the lower heim joint, I think they will rub depending on how the link rotates. The trick is to rotate the link towards the outside and bolt the mount straight vertically, so the link can only rotate towards the inside thus keeping the mount from turning outward. I may have to play with EPA slighting and another options is moving the shock mounts all the way down to the heim which will pull them closer into the center of the rim. Just driving it last night I didnt really notice any rubbing from the mounts, but Im getting a lot of rubbing from whats left of the rear fenders since I chose to run a full size non crawler body. I think the Savage shock length are what the designers should have gone with because those lower mounts will always get hung up when you need them to be out of the way. I'll do some more testing tonight, but I think everything will work out.

Looks nice! That is a sweet paint job! Get some action vids if you can. There are a few on Youtube but they kinda suck. Can't WAIT to get mine put together. My motors should be here tomorrow. I'll have everything but the batteries, but I have plenty of packs I can run in this thing while I wait for the cells I ordered. I'm in the same boat as you, if I would have known how much it would cost to get it running... :p |

Nice truck, looks great. What servo's did you end up running? I am also putting one together, i will likely go with the 8711's. Super class parts sure aint cheap =P I picked a helluva truck for my first=) Hopefully overtime picks up here soon so i can get it finished off.

Im running the 144oz Airtronics from Hobby People, like $35 each, if they live, great, if not, I'll step up to 200 oz. No, the superclass build has not been cheap, totalled arounnd $1200 so far.

$1200!? Jeez! Bringin mine in around $650, but I already have my radio so I guess I can see some of the cost of yours if you had to buy a radio for it. Those 144 oz probably won't last long in a rig this size. I tried one I had laying around and it barely made the wheels turn. |

Looks good ![]() If those servos don't hold up you might want to go straight to a 400+ oz servo, so you don't wind up with a pile of servos like me ![]() |

I hear you, the last thing I need is more extra parts that don't work or aren't needed any more. Crawling is new to me, I've got an all aluminum extrended heavy Tmaxx that has an HS625 servo for the steering which works fine for that truck. I had no idea crawlers needed so much torque till now. There doesnt seem to be much support for this truck at the moment. When I visited RCX last year, I was sort of intrigued because crawling seemed to be the biggest draw at the show, but I wanted no part of it, as it seemed boring at the time. Well, this year at RCX, I visited with Axial and some of the other crawler manufacturers. I saw the new unrealeased Axial RTC and kept my eye on it, but when the X-crawler went on sale, I just had to have it. Ive got so many other rc cars and plane projects going on right now, I dont know when I'll even have time to finish them let alone play with them, at least this one is almost ready to go. I really think I have serious problem with R/C toys, at least that's what my wife tells me. Last edited by evlwevl; 06-05-2009 at 12:42 AM. |
