Default my x crawler tuber with 1/4 scale servos

Hey guys! I thought you like to see my setup and my fix for the wimpy standard size servos. I made the battery and servo mount out of some aluminum angle stock it bought at my local hardware store, It really didn’t take that long to make, all I uses was a angle grinder, dermal tool and a drill press. The servos are hitec mega ¼ scale servos, they are plastic geared and only cost $40.00each and put out 343 oz of torque at 6volts. With these servos you must run a Y harness with a receiver pack connected to the servo in order for it to work right and not damage your receiver. They have proven to be extremely strong and have yet to have any problem.

Its close but doesn’t rub anywhere, the only think the wheel rubs on is the four link when fully turned. I did have to take the servo apart and drill a hole in the back of the cover so i could run the wire straight out the back instead of out the side, the upper link was rubbing on it and I was worried it would break. Other than that it went really smooth. Ill see what I can do about taking some video, I just took it back apart so I could finish making the body panels for the tuber.

Thanks for the pics, I have a couple tower pro (I think) 1/4 scale servos. It's nice to see someone else do it first

I use a quarter scale servo in my Cen GST and it turns the 7" tall wheels on the ground while the truck is still.

Sick rig, makes me want to keep my XTM kit i picked up to do a similar project with. Nice job on mouting the servo's flat, it looks great, i have never liked the look of them standing verticaly. Happen to want another one to modify? haha.

The chassis is custom, I built it in my shop as few weeks ago. This is my third chassis I have built out of brass. I love working with the stuff, its so easy to cut and solder and it has proven to be very strong. I have to get up some new pics asap, I added some different shock towers and I am now running aluminum savage shocks. Right now im just finishing up the body and should have it painted and back together this weekend.

are you using just propane to solder with ? or mapp ? or do you even need a flame ? I read lots of people are brazing which takes more heat so they are using a mixture of gases. How are you doing the brass ?

I have been using a small butane torch, it works really well. I like using brass the best because I can work with It in my basement with little risk of me burning the house down. For tools all you need is a dermal tool, tubing cuter and bender, silver solder, flux and your butane torch. The open flame of the torch works really well, it takes a little time to figure out how and wear to heat the pipe, but when you get the hang of it its really easy. I built 90% of my x crawler chassis on one rainy Saturday. When your soldering with the torch you don’t have to put the flame directly on the joint your soldering, you can heat an inch or so up from the joint. This helps when you have multiple peaces coming gather in the same spot, this is so your not taking apart a joint that you already haves soldered. Hears a pic of the style torch I use, I buy refill gas for it at my local CVS, it’s the same cylinders used for refilling lighters.

This is my first tuber I ever built, it took a lot of time but it was worth it. Hopefully you should be seeing this truck in the readers rides section of RC car action very soon.

I finally got the body done and the savage shocks installed. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics but you’ll get the idea.
