How to Lock a Stampede Differential

Text & photos by Jay Kopycinski

If you’re running a Traxxas Stampede tranny in your driveshaft crawler it’s a good idea to lock the differential so that you get fully power to the front and rear driveshafts all the time.

The process is quite simple and here we’ll show you how.

1
This is the Traxxas part #2388 which consists of the main diff gear, four planet gears, two output shafts, five steel pins, side cover plate, four screws, and a tube of grease. We won’t be using the grease as we want to stop the internal rotation of the output and planet gears. We’ll do that here using JB Weld, but other 2-part epoxies will work as well.
2
(1) We start by assembling all the parts as shown here and according to the Traxxas drawing.
3
(2) Since we want to keep epoxy out of the four screw holes in the main diff gear, it may be helpful to block them. We used some of the 42,000 or so Tamiya assembly screws we have lying around from old RC kits and lightly inserted them in the holes.
4
(3) Next, mix up the epoxy and drip it in to fill the area between the planet gears. It’s not necessary to fill the entire cavity. We set the diff gear assembly on a socket while we added the epoxy.
5
(4) Remove the plug screws and assemble the side cover with output gear and let the assembly harden overnight. Now you have a diff assembly that’s locked and both driveshafts will always rotate together.
