Jeep Rubicon on homemade chassis build-up

looks good ten feet or not still better then i can do
Thanks, its just frustrating knowing it could be better if I wasnt such a slob and impatient. Also I need to find something better than masking tape since I got some bleed through. Any one have thoughts on that?

Nice build so far! "thumbsup"On the paint I use the green automotive painters tape & liquid mask. I've had good luck with both

Jeep looms great Slobert!!! The trick to building with patience is to have a runner you like, So you can run it while
building the other. That way your not rushing your current build! It looks like you have a helluv a runner now! Its time to start
another!!!! Oh yea get us some video...

Not quite a runner yet but getting there. Just have to finish rear bumper and body mounts and I am waiting on a radio I got off of E-bay. I think you are right. Now that I will have one to play with and learn to crawl with it will make it easier to enjoy the build and take time on the next one. Of course I will have to take my time as My play money is spread out over too many expensive hobbies and some of them need attention. But hey! I have an RC jeep! Yay! Oh yeah, I'll post video and finall pictures once its complete. Thanks for all the imput everyone!

wow im definately liking that paint job, great job
Thanks, what can I say, I was a teenager in the 80's and have a soft spot for crazy paint jobs. When I was an impressionable youth, It was hard to find a cover vehicle in a mag that didnt have the "torn" or "jagged" or just plain wacky paint job...at least until the "euro" look came in and then they painted everthing down to the door handles the same solid color. Anyways, I am glad you like it. I am out of town for a wedding this week, but should have it finished and running in a week and will post pictures and video!

I dunno, do you think my little sis would understand If I skipped her nuptials to work on my jeep?

latest progress 17-08-08

I got back from my Sisters wedding and had some parts waiting on my porch. The radio hasnt come yet, so its not quite a runner, but everything else got done this afternoon. I finished the tranny brace, the shroud for the spur gear, mounted the body posts. And mounted the electronics tray. I kept the electronics tray solid without any lightening holes to help balance the weight of the battery mounted up front. I like the chassis to be on the heavy side for realistic handling and flexing.

The finished chassis.

A close up showing the tranny mount and shroud. you can also see how I mounted the posts and my bolted on nerf bars. I cant wait for the radio!

Heres a few poser shots on the rocks in my front yard.

The rig is not quite heavy enough to flex the suspension all the way. I will run it for awhile before I decide if I want softer springs. I like the feel of it as it is now.

I think its looking sweet. I might add a few scale goodies such as a hi-lift and some offroad lights, but I think I will save the crazy stuff for another build. I intend to drive this one alot!

I love how the tranny mount/ skid plate turned out. I think i will use this method on future builds. It really helps tie the chassis together and stiffen every thing up.

gotta have the upskirt shot. I like the looks of the chassis.

as soon as the radio comes, I will get it running and get some video!

Video

Ok, she's a runner!

I am blown away by how fun it is to drive. It handles great and performs better than my expectations. So far the only thing i would do different is a stronger steering servo. I went with a Hitec 645mg and it is OK, but not great. Unfortunately, the front end is built around the servo, so I dont know if there are stronger servos the same size...hmm. Any ways, the video is shot in my front yard and my wife stole the remote from me and did about half the driving. Five years ago I was into electric and nitro stadium trucks and had a t-maxx. She never really got into them. She LOVES the jeep though. She wants to take it camping with us. AWSOME...it will make it easier for her to approve funds for future projects! Ok, enough chit chat. watch the video and let me know what you think!

That is a great video. How long did it take you to fab the frame. It also seems that most of the cool scalers are jeeps. Is it just that they have a lot more detail to copy.

Thanks, it took about three hours to plan out and then cut out and clean up the frame rails using clamps, a jig saw, dremal tool, and bench grinder/wire wheel. I used pictures of the 1:1 frame as a guidelline. The whole chassis took two weeks of after work nights to finish. I think the popularity of the jeep body just reflects the popularity of the 1:1 jeep as a trail vehicle. Plus smaller vehicles like the jeep and bronco run truer to scale in a lexan body than others. For me personally, I have always wanted a jeep and its on the list, so this was a natural choice for me.

Looks great! Gotta love those jeeps. I need to get ahold of some of those shocks. I think they would work great on my Rubicon. I thought that I needed 90mm shocks, but you have your frame tucked nicely under the body & the ride height is perfect. My chassis is very similar to yours so I'm sure I can drill some new holes & set it good. I'm using a droop setup with axial shocks right now, 'cause I ran out of funds. I keep looking at your thread pics & your youtube video more than I've looked at most others ('cause it's close to my setup). I love the way yours rides over the rocks.

Yeah, I used these shocks cuz its what I had, but I really like them, and being threaded they are easy to adjust. And being stadium truck shocks, there are tons of spring options. I drilled the oil holes in the shocks bigger since I was too cheap to just buy thinner shock oil and it rides even better now. Also, there are no wheel weights in the tires in the video, but I have some coming that should make it more stable and ride even better. All in all, I think stadium truck shocks are an overlooked options. There are tons on ebay for cheap and they have plenty of travel for a scaler. I have run a dozen packs now thru the jeep and I feel lucky that my set up turned out as good as it did, cause it works great."thumbsup"

upgrades and fallow up video

OK, I have made some budget performance mods. I got a venom fireball 55t motor, along with a cheapo Moped bravo ESC. I also put 2.5 oz of tire weights on each wheel. Its more stable now and can get some good angles before tipping over. The 55T motor makes a huge difference. Top speed is still a walking speed so its fine but not great, but the payoff was worth it...lowend control and torque is awsome. Much more finess on the rocks. Here is a fallow up video with the new mods.
