I didn't build that course.
OK, the wife and I have decided to get a RockBand type of game for our kids this christmas.

Problem is....I have no idea WTF is up with any of them. We went to Toysrus and looked at a few of them, now we are really confused. LOL

We want one that has the guitar, drums, and mic but, i think most of them do now anyways. So please post up you opinions on which is the one to go with.

My kids are 9 and 13 and we have a wii and 360.

Thanks for the help guys."thumbsup"

i just got the wii package with guitar, drums and mic. the guitar and drums will need their own controler seperate. it kina of a pain to take them out and put them in again just to play. its good fun though. i need to get a bass now. and some more cd's. im getting the hang of the drums, it let you break down the songs by verse and speed so you can learn each section untill you get it right. kinda addicting

Our 17 year old has both for the Xbox.

The Guitar Hero we bought only has the guitar, no other instruments.

Rock Band is pretty fun, because there are so many options. The ability to control the speed of the song is excellent!

Not sure what each of them comes with now, but my money would be on Rock Band, so they can both use the game at the same time, and you can get the family involved. You don't have to be "good" at it to have fun. "thumbsup"

Carbo,
We bought the girls Rockband two years ago, updated to RB2 last year and this year got Beatles RB.

I have to tell you that it was the best investment for gaming. Throughout the winter, if it ever gets cold, the four of us would do one night on the weekend a band concert.

We now have two guitars, two sets of drums and kids come from miles around to play.

The funny thing is watching our kids sing word for word songs like Detroit Rock City and then get excited when they hear it on the radio.

I don't know much about GH but I can tell you that RB2 is awesome...

My wife and I bought a Wii last year and picked up Guitar Hero World Tour and Legends of Rock. We're not really fans of singing or the drums, so it's fine for us, although I know you can add the other instruments later. I would think either one would be good for your kids, or maybe one of both? We need to pick up the latest Guitar Hero, whatever it's called.

I have Guitar hero world tour, smash hits, guitar hero 5, van halen etc. Love it, a little harder to sing on this one (meaning its more your voice out there for everyone to hear)
I also have Rock band, Rock band 2 and love it also. Easier to sing(voice is more muddled by instruments)
Both have great songs to sing, rockband downloads are much better(xbox live)
Guitar hero has released much more content lately i.e. more games(songs) to perform.
Would be a toss up based on if you are going to connect to the internet to download or simply buy games to get new songs.? Up to you on that one.
I have my favorite songs on each.
We rock out as a family and we have friends over for "Rockband" parties. They are a total blast!
Kevin

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I have read a few different places that the instruments that ya get with guitar hero are better than the ones ya get with RockBand. Those of you that have both, what are your thoughts on this. I also heard that the Rock Band drums do not come with cymbals, that you have to buy those extra.

Also, if we get it on the 360 I'm sure we will be downloading some new songs but, i would imagine most of the new songs we would just buy a new game for it.

The instruments don't feel any better or worse between the two different games. I actually prefer the Rockband guitar, mics are exactly the same. The Rockband drums have 4 pads across and guitar hero has 3 across with what looks like cymbals but they don't function as cymbals like you would think. I prefer the Rockband drums, my gf prefers the guitar hero drums.......go figure!
The downloads cost you 160 microsoft points which works out to about $3.60 a song. Not too bad in my opinion. I have about $200 worth of songs downloaded to my harddrive!

for kids, i would probabbly go w/ rock band. the dificulty level is not as high as guitar hero and infamous hand stretching anthems.
it has a much better set of drums and ive heard alot of good things about "lego rock band" not only that but it looks like the rockband 2 bundle is on sale at a lot of places. (saw it in target for 70 last week)
rockband also has a much much more extensive list of downloadable content

i like the guitar hero guitar more. i like the clicky feel of the strum bar, over the spongy feel of the rb. and if you learn how to use the slider on the neck of the guitar, it just feels awsome when your shreding out some face melting solos on expert.

as for the drums i prefer the rockband drums. the aluminum legs and the way the bass pedal hooks into the base give it a much much more solid feel especially if you're playing on uncarpeted floors. i feel like the pads also have a better rebound.
ive heard alot of issues about the gh drum's sensors getting knocked loose, or the sensitivity ring under the pad cracking after some extended use. not a big fan of their stick storage solution either

I love them both like nothing else. I'm addicted to the drums. I'll do an 8 hour bender right now! I'd call off work to play! I love it!

Expert drums only, I have no desire to play anything else.

It's of my opinion that you should choose whichever one has the music you'll play more. I started with RB, but play GH much more now because I enjoy the 5 drum pads more than the 4, and the little extra challenge GH has compared to RB. Sometimes it seems with RB you have to be more perfect than GH, but GH does seem to have more notes to play.

The GH Metallica disc is fun for a lot of the dudes in my age group, but your kids might not care at all for that one. Shop for the music, and consider what you can download.

Well after reading all the comments here and talking to a few of the local game stores.....as for right now. We are leaning towards getting one of the RB sets and a GH guitar to go with it.

Looks like the local wallyworld is gonna have the RB special edition on sale for 50$ on black Friday. If for some reason I miss out on one of those, a local game store has the RB2 for 100$

I will also be picking up a few used GH games, since they will work with the RB set. "thumbsup"

Now this is all subject to change.....and probably will a few times.

X2
ive noticed rb has alot or repeatative parts. metalica's drums on the hardest setting is insane, when it comes to using the double bass pedal. i wont even attempt a dbp song.

Be careful thinking that you can buy one game and use ALL the instruments to play both. You might be disappointed.
I know the drums do not work from one to the other. It seems like the mics don't like to go both ways but I can't remember which way?

be careful and dont get addicted... I started out buying the first GH on the ps2 because it actually brought my oldest daughter out of her room and hung out with us parents. We ended up liking it as much as the kids. Then i bought a second guitar...then the second GH....then i bought a PS3....

So long story short....

PS2..
GH, GH 2

PS3

GH3
GH World Tour
GH Areosmith
GH Metallica
GH Van Halen
GH 5
RB
RB 2
RB ACDC
and a total of 150 songs downloaded?

Instruments...

PS2 - 2 guitars
ps3 - 5 guitars-2 drums-2 mics

only goo thing in all of this...its a blast to have people over and rotate thru the instruments....me made a house rule that you HAVE to sing if you want to play....lots of fun, but it got very expensive FAST

We just got Lego Rockband and my sons love it. They are 11 and 8 years old. It's very kid oriented"thumbsup"

With all that different equipment and games, whats interchangeable?

Will the GH games work with the RB instruments, and visversa?

This is getting more confusing as I go.....

I was told today by another local game store that, not all GH games will work with the RB instruments. But, since we will be getting the game on the 360, all of the RB games will work with the GH instruments.

LOL Bring on even more grey hair.

Can anyone set me straight on this?

I know on my stuff...NOTHING is interchangeable..but i hear the newer RB and GH stuff SOME does interchange...But i cant confirm
